I purchased this truck in September 2019 and I'm very happy with the truck performance in everything. This February (2023) the Engine Light came on so I thought I can do something for myself, and I purchased from On-Line the software and Navigation Map Updates, and I successfully updated what was in both software's. This did not fix the Engine Light, so I bring it to the local dealership (Arrigo Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of West palm Beach) for further testing of the problem. There was broken the "Purge Solenoid" and they told me that there are more 15 updates that are required at this time, and I agreed for the service but when I went to pick-up my truck the bill was $2,000 for only the software updates. Nothing I can do just to pay and get back my truck. My point is if we can tell everybody what they are charging for the software updates so the new byers can have up in front what is going to cost this maintenance so everyone can negotiate the pricing.

Makes no sense why they would charge you 2K for software updates. Did they not tell you what it would cost or what each of the updates were for before doing so you could decide if you even needed or wanted them?

WHY was OP charged for the "updates"? Should of only been charged Labor time for the updates to be installed. Smells a lil "fishy" here.

I had "5" updates done on my truck the other week, and all I paid was the Labor rate plus tax, me thinks something un-kosher has happened to OP.

3-27-2023:
EDITED: Actually, only paid LABOR rate when I looked the receipt back up from my file, since there were no other parts used. We R all programmed to think yup tax, LOL, I stand corrected. However, I did not pay for the "UPDATE", just the LABOR time. SO if anyone is being charged for the "UPDATE per se, something rotten in "Denmark".

Uh, NO.
Jusst , No.

Did you authorize work, without a cost estimate?
If so, Enjoy your newly minted Education for which you have so dearly paid.

IF they never said it would actually cost you, for an update, then tell them to screw off
and eagerly await going to court over the issue.

Be small claims and guess what, those Judges have cars too.

Pay for an Update?

Navigation updates, I;m guessing and you musta bought each adn every one in teh seeries

Find another dealer
and get soemone who knows whats what to go with you into dealerships.

OR

DO what I an many others od, if its under warranty, dealr gets a chance ot fix it. if it ain;t under warranty, no way do they touch the car.

Updates for that POS eTorque there have been allot of problems with the generator and 48v battery pack, I have a friend with the same, those updated are covered under the 80,000 mile warrantee don't pay them a cent, typical Steelership practice in florida, half of the world has moved there!!!

Also get a list of what was updated, that purge valve should of been covered.

Labor in Texas on automotive repair isn't taxed.

Might not be taxed, but they sure do charge. Got my MC back today from shop, most of the charges were for labor, not the part needed. But it is Texas, everything is Bigger, lmao. Might need to dig out the last receipt from Dealership and look at that, lol.

Any dealership I've ever used in the past 3 or 4 decades all follow the same SOP. In fact the tiny local garage I use has the same SOP.

Discuss what work I'm looking to have completed at which point I ask for costs even if I had the same work completed on another vehicle last week, last month, or last year.

I always ask for a time estimate and then they always hand me a printed work order with an itemized list of charges.

I review the charges to make certain I was clear on the details as presented and the bottom line is correct.

Work will not start until I've signed and returned the work order. If they didn't follow this exact process, it's time for small claims court, if you paid just to get your truck returned.

Notify the State Comptroller's office. Them charging you tax for something not taxable will get the attention of the Comptroller.

OK, 0758 today, 3-26-2023, and your comment made me go and pull a couple receipts from both 2 different dealerships and check my Motorcycle receipt from yesterday. There was (NO TAX) applied against the labor charge, just parts. SO learned something new and definitely something to remember for the future. Always nice to learn something new here in forum. Did not check the "miscellaneous" amounts, like shop supplies, not care, just worried about the big numbers, and as PPL know, Labor get stupid Expensive. My MC labor is $110 an hour, local dealership (FCA) is $72.50 an hour.

ADDED: Wonder no tax on labor just a Texas thing or is it all 50 states. Somebody in another state would have to look and chime in.

I don't know, because I live in Texas and conduct my business as an Automotive Repair facility in Texas. I've had agents from the Comptrollers bring it to my attention when I've erred only a couple of times in the years of owning this shop. The friendly folks at the Comptrollers were more than happy to direct me in the correct pathway.... and fine me! Guess how diligent I am now as to making very sure I am NOT to err!

I'm a Houston native. My first job out of high school was near the dome on Ardmore St. "Camco" Inc. I was a machinist for 3 years before "coming over to the dark side" LOL! Being a mechanic!
