Welcome to RamForum. I moved your thread into the 5th Gen area, you'll probably get more responses. That said, I believe this is a known, fairly common 5th Gen issue.

Couldnt say if its common in 5th gen or not. I just know what causes it. Vent or kinked fill tube.

Have only had my 21 Big Horn for less than two months and only filled twice, but no issue either time. I will say that I had a cap-less tank on an old Ford Escape a few years back. It had the issue of constantly clicking off over and over, to which I finally was able to fix by just pulling the nozzle out an inch or two. If I stuck the gas nozzle in as far as it'd go, I think it was basically creating some kind of seal where the pressure wasn't proper and the pump kept thinking it was full. Backing it out an inch or two still engaged the tank to fill but allowed the pressure to equalize out, and it would still click off properly when it was actually was full.

Give that a shot and see if that helps.

They way i combat this is i lift the handle so the nozzle is pointing as far down as possible. Seems to work 90% of the time.

2019 is included in the 5th Gen unless it's a Classic.

I had that problem on a 2018 Laramie. The dealership ended up having to replace the gas tank and evaporation cannister to fix it. I haven't had any problems with my 2021 DT.

I never had any issues with my 2020 Laramie for the first year of ownership. But for the last couple of months I've noticed that the pumps shut off without fully filling the tank. My normal range (23 gallon tank) is about 340 miles. But lately that has dropped down to about 285 miles. It's bad enough having a small fuel tank. Not being able to fill it completely just adds salt to that wound. I haven't changed which gas stations I use, and changing how I insert the pump nozzle does nothing to help. I'm probably going to take it in and have the dealer take a look, but I already know what they'll say about it..."sorry, no problem found. It's normal behavior." LOL

I'm not a mechanic, but possible evap cannister and/or purge valve. When you fill the gas tank, the displaced fuel vapors need somewhere to go. Usually, that means migrating to the canister and associated components. But if the canister is clogged, the vapors may back up into the gas tank and make refueling difficult. Since you didn't have a problem for the first year, I wouldn't think it would be the tank filler neck problem many other posts talk about. Unless something moved in the past year. JMHO

I don't know if the newer Rams are much different from the 2013 - 2017
In those years there was an issue with the fuel nozzle shutting off.
The issue was that the air pressure would shut off the valve.

Ram was replacing the whole tank, when the issue was the fuel neck & or the curvature of the fuel nozzle.
The Costco nozzles all where switched to a design that had too much of a curvature, this lined up the Rams vent tube hole with the fuel nozzles venting port, ( thats the little hole a the end of the nozzle ). This design kept shutting off the nozzle.

Ram experimented with the Vent tube entry port, this is what they came up with.

You may be able to see the difference between the old style & the replacement

You should be able to look underneath & see if you have a kinked hose, but you can't see a thing above the fuel tank

Fuel door from the inside

area above the fuel tank will look similar to this eco-diesel setup

A word of caution;

Don't top off your fuel tank !!

If you do it enough, it will overflow the fuel tank & the excess fuel will enter the charcoal canister.
If fuel enters the charcoal canister, it deteriorates the charcoal, that sets off a sensor in the EVAP system & you ill find yourself at a repair shop :(

Can the capless system be retrofitted to a simple cap system to avoid all this nonsense? I just bought a 2021 Bighorn Hemi etorque that's done this with about half of the fillups so far.
