The small light that shines down on the center console (located between the two map lights) turns on at will and sometimes, doesn't turn off, even when the key is off and out of the ignition. I don't even know of a switch for this particular light. Any ideas on how to control this thing? Thanks in advance.

What year and trim? Should be a dimmer wheel next to the light knob.

Check the owners manual.

That light is controlled by the dimmer knob. The light bis linked to the running lights being on and will also illuminate when you "wake the truck up" like opening the door

The light on mine is also always on, just adjusts with dimmer switch for all lights.

Thanks for your input everyone. I couldn't find anything specific about it in the owner's manual, but with your suggestions, I went out and ran through all the settings on my lights: key on, key off, etc. I now know that it is simply an interior light that comes on every time the headlights/running lights come on. Because of the delay in turning off the headlights automatically, this interior light also stays on for that extra amount of time, making me think that it was intermittent about turning off. I think the reason my battery got drained is more closely linked to the fact that my backup camera screen is powered 24/7 from the USB port. What's hard for me to figure out is how such a small device can drain an 800 Amp/Hour battery in just a few days....

I have a USB powered dash camera that I have powered all the time. About 4 days it ran my batts stone dead. I now have a battery tender wired to a trailer plug and I plug it in if the truck sits for more than 2 days.

Very helpful to know this. Adding the camera is the only thing that changed before I started experiencing the problem. I just couldn't believe the camera system pulls so much current. Well, now I know...! I'm thinking I will modify the cigarette lighter adapter and wire that into a switched circuit, so when the truck is off, the camera system is too.

Simple... I'll forget! Ha!

Better to work 2 hours to build a reliable automatic shut-off option than to go out to my truck after three days in snow and find that I'm housebound - like I did last week.

The typical Group 94R battery used in these trucks only has about a 70ah rating, 800 is the CCA.
If you do the maths, a consistent 0.5A draw on the battery can deplete it in about 6 days. The minimum rating a typical USB A has to supply is 0.5A, but can deliver more depending on the device.
I ran into a similar situation with my wireless AndroidAuto adapter, but it would wake the radio up. Now the radio media USB port in my center console is switched with the ignition.

Wire that camera to a “hot when on wire.” That way when you turn your truck off, the camera turns off. Also the “800” is cca, not Ah.

By the way,
The little light up in the overhead console is called the
ASH TRAY LIGHT

It used to drive me nuts, i would be driving across the desert after dark , not a street or building light for miles.

That light shown down on the chrome ring on the full floor console & then onto something else & i could see a Blue light shining on my right side passenger door.
For the longest time, i thought that the blue light was coming off of a Flying Saucer, it just hovered there

Why have the camera powered by the USB when not using? Unplug No?..problem solved.

Because it doesn't record if it's not plugged in! Like when you're parked and come out of the store to find your bumper stoved in. Camera doesn't do any good unplugged. Plus I can access the recording via Wifi so if its parked home all day I can go back and review what occurred without even accessing the vehicle.
For anyone wondering, I mounted a USB plug in the glovebox and used an existing plug that was hiding behind it. Ran the wire behind the glovebox and up the A-pillar. I did this so I can unplug it or leave it on, opposed to tapping in the rear view mirror harness.

I use a power magic pro to cut power to accessories when the truck is off and the voltage drops below a certain threshold.

Thanks for this, Crash68. I had never thought about the "power density" of car batteries before. I foolishly thought that 800amps was somehow 800 Amp-Hours. 70 makes way more sense and tells me why I had the initial problem.
