...since emptying the original factory fill it's been nothing but Pennzoil. I ran Pennzoil Yellow bottle for I think about an additional 2k change. and then it's been Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-20 continuously after that (none longer than 4k miles, which for this truck means about once annually). with Fram XG 10060 filter only. 6 years later it's still running like a sewing machine.
What are your temperatures like during Summer where you live?

...about everyday above 100, a lot of days above 110 degrees, and the scorchers at 115+.
Over here in Dubai, our temps average to 48 - 50.C in Summer. Not really advisable for anything to run 5W20 on here. Still didn't stop the dealer from selling me Mopar 5W20. From what I can gather, Mopar oil is basically repackaged PUP.
Anyways.. after about 7 years with the truck, the tick just suddenly manifested itself. It wasn't gradual.
I assumed that Arizona had similar temps like us over here in Dubai so to hear that your engine is so quiet while using 5W20 is amazing. I'm guessing what has saved your engine are the short OCIs. Over here I change my oil every 10,000kms (6213 miles).

meh, I could probably run PUP 5w30 a season and see if I notice any difference (hell in our heat and at that point if I wanted a heavy oil I could run PUP 10W30). but IMO what's kept the engine running so good is excellent maintenance AND never driving the truck like a jack@ss.

@REDinAZ Couldn't agree more. Nothing beats excellent maintenance.
With my grey truck, I was fastidious with my oil changes and in keeping with the manual. That's the reason I was shocked when the tick came in. It wasn't supposed to happen. I did everything correctly. Where did I go wrong? These were my thoughts.
It was then I realized that I was knowledge was limited. Knowing what I know now, following the manual isn't always the best idea. It gets you close.
I decided that I would run my engine on 5W30 only and in the peak temps of Summer, 5W40 would be the best choice. No more 5W20 for me. I've been burned far too many times to take chances.

You mean it is ticking? It is hard to decipher the meaning of this post, are you happy with the performance of your engine or bothered by it?

East Mesa born and raised, just moved out of state end of last year. Been running PUP 5W-30 with a Royal Purple filter for a few years, including camper towing up and over the rim in summer weather (got a little toasty some runs), and daily commuting.

I was happy with the PUP, here's the oil reports if you're curious. The 1qt make up oil was when I switched to a remote filter, no burning oil at all, and that last interval was pulling the camper across country loaded down for moving.

interesting report, so same oil on last two intervals? The only difference one was towing most the time and the other wasnt? if so as you can see it was hard on viscosity and a little more iron wear, but the main point you can see the engine was used harder but the oil was serving you well.

Same oil for all the tests, PUP 5-30 with the small RP filter (I know I know), until the last interval was with the 30-8a filter. All the intervals had at least one camper trip and one flatbed with toys trip on them, the last interval was just more towing, 1500ish miles with the loaded bed and camper.

Yeah I expected it to be a little harder on the engine, that's why I did a short change after the move.

Seems crazy and it doesn't look to have solved his problem either. Wouldn't a truck load of rocks be better? The greenies would have a stroke watching this.
In the twitter thread they covered it over with dirt, so I'm not really certain why the trucks needed to be there, maybe just a solidification of the dam that had already broken out. But this also just moves the break point to either side I would think. Water will find a way.

Also, doesn't take a "greenie" to think dumping a running truck into water that's flowing in to what looks like food growing or housing area is not the best idea.

sorry for confusion bud! "sewing machine" the status = Very Good! I guess typically more a firearms reference... an auto loader that feeds, fires, and ejects VERY reliably, "man, that sucker runs like a sewing machine."

Look at your 100C viscosity. Not sure what's going on with dates since they usually are in decreasing order from left to right, but it sure looks to me like you got an API SP reformulated oil for your short run.

Notoriously lower viscosity within SAE grade to "save" fuel.

I'd urge an SAE 40 wt viscosity now, except for the race oils that don't give a rip about EPA CAFE can stay a true mid or high vis SAE 30.

so, just out of curiosity, what is your guys fascination with this Redline 5w30 over something lets say as decent as the PUP 5w30 ??? I mean I can get 3 of the 5 qt jugs of PUP off Amazon sent to the house, that covers 2 full oil changes, for roughly $100 (IMO an ABSURDLY good choice weighing the cost + the oil's quality). I'd spend $$double$$ that on the RL 5w30. Can that RL oil be that much better? Not trying to be dismissive here, or a know it all, just trying to gain some knowledge/insights.
