My 18 year old son bought a 2015 Ram 4x4 5.7L with 120k miles a couple weeks ago after saving up money from working the past few years. After putting a few hundred miles on it, it started making a weird chirping noise, that's kind of intermittent. It increases with rpm but doesn't get louder.

We took it to my small mechanic and he listened to it with a stethoscope and thinks it is coming from behind the engine. He sent me to a transmission shop. The guy at the shop checked it over and isn't sure, thought it might be the torque converter starting to go out possibly. He said drive it till the sound gets worse and we can better isolate the problem.

If anyone can help identify the problem, we would be grateful.

I had a problem similar, it was something in the a/c system but dang if I can remember exactly what it was. Think it was some type of pressure release or cycling thing. Does he have a/c or defrost on when it happens. Try with it off and turn while system off.

We removed the belt and it's still making the same sound.

I thought my son had checked it, but when we went over the manifolds again, we found two broken bolts on the passenger side.

He's thinking about getting headers, so we haven't addressed it yet.

He's got a separate problem that I think isn't related, in that I think his Tipm is going bad. This truck has it's oil changed religiously before we bought it, saw all kinds of service records. It ran perfect the first couple of weeks he had it, not a single noise or problem that we could hear or see. I guess we got the reverse lotto.

what is it doing that you think the tipm is going bad? Also Tipms are easy and cheap to repair just depends what the issue is.

One morning last week, his truck started running bad and then it wouldn't start when he went to leave Home Depot. I read up on the thing about pushing on the fuel pump fuse with a screwdriver and we tried it. It started right up.

Fuse was probably just loose what goes bad in the tipm is the fuel pump relay inside the tipm. The fix for that would be take it all apart un solder it and re solder a new one on.

Is there a specific way to test that relay?

He started getting a cylinder 6 misfire today. He swapped plugs and coil pack with another cylinder and the misfire stayed on cylinder 6. I'm not sure how old the plugs are.

We might as well start into it tomorrow, it needs the exhaust leak fixed regardless. Hopefully it isn't a lifter, but we will try to work through it.

Pull passenger side valve cover off and inspect #6 rocker arm, also they sell a bypass for the fuel pump relay here's the link.

We checked the resistance on the fuel injectors and none were out of range. We put a noid tester on it and it passed. It also has good compression on that cylinder.

We pulled the valve cover off and didn't notice any of the valves looking off when we cranked it over. My son was going to go ahead and pull the rocker, push rods and lifters while it's open, to inspect everything.

We also removed the manifold, but I still need to weld some nuts to the broken bolts.

Rocker arms look fine and pushrods all look good. We drained the oil and there's a little bit of metal flakes in it, we're going to drop the pan and take a look at it.

I was questioning whether he wanted to pull the head, I think he thought he could pull the lifters out without pulling the head. Now he's rethinking that.

He's debating on going further or putting it all back together and seeing if the misfire clears up.

It is probably a roller failing on one of the lifters.
That's what I'm thinking too. Should probably tear it down, it's already part of the way there.
Wondering if he should just plan to replace the cam and lifters while he's in there, at least he would know where he stands.

What is a better option on the cam than the stock Mopar? We need to probably get some parts ordered.

He's lucky that he's able to be without his vehicle for a while if need be. He has more time than money at this point.

If its that far apart just do the cam/lifters its most likely your issue doing the same on my new truck 2014 similar miles. I am going to use a mopar cam and aftermarket lifters keep it stock and tune out mds. By the time it goes bad again another 100k miles truck will be rotted in half. Unless your looking for more performace alot of cam kits out there I am sure others will post about that.

Lifter #6 is bad, lots of vertical play in the roller. A small flat spot starting to form on it. Haven't pulled the cam yet, but the heads look good still.

My son snapped off one of the lifter hold down bolts.

I looked at the torque wrench and it looks like he had it set at 11 ft lbs instead of 9 ft lbs. Looks like he's going to be drilling that out. Any suggestions or just go for it with an extractor?
