Hey Y'all

So I have been trying to make up my mind on what I want to do for wheels for my White 2017 SLT.
I do a fair amount of towing during the camping season. (apprx 9000lbs) and some offroad use at the farm/cabin.

It came with the nice 5 spoke 17's, and at first I was onboard with getting some new 285/70 General Grabber ATX768a74d7-7876-4ffd-a860-b97de67c7593_1.d0a4ea011fdee1775eb64911c432e027.jpggeneral_grabber_atx.jpg
But I recently found 2 sets of cheap 20's for sale 1 set is chrome for 400 obo315581808_8275116639225441_6327475730877437274_n.jpg
And the other set is painted black or gray for 200 obo318475356_8858456140861611_927884274494270762_n.jpg (Prices are Canadian $)

So, Should I stick with the 17's and a 285/70 or swap to 20's (solely for aesthetics) and do a 285/65

I like the chrome look as it matches my grille and bumpers, and I could sand and paint the others OEM gray,

But I think, I may be leaning more towards the 17's after pondering about it for a week, what would you guys do?

Check tire prices ,maybe that will influence your decision.

After you mentioned this earlier I did some comparisons.

There is around $1k+ difference between the 20's and 17's after its all said and done.

That's a big jump in price to try and convince wifey :chair:

Im really thinking about going with these. Im getting tired of the K/02's

JTB, not to thread jack, but my 2 cents brother, I'd pass on those General. Last set of 31x10.50 that I put on the BRONCO were some of those Grabbers (I drive it so infrequently it had BFG with production dates that had actually gotten too old, lol). Nothing about them have really impressed me. Now they aren't awful, but in hindsight I would have gone elsewhere. Just my opinion, I'd look at some more tire options before you make up your mind.

EDIT: and FWIW I am NOT bashing General. I've got their AltiMAX R43 on 2 other cars in the driveway and those tires are excellent.

17 or 18" has a FAR better selection of tires, way cheaper to buy the rubber, and a lot more sidewall at the same diameter. I consider 20" rims to be an appearnace piece suitable for pavement use. We have them on the Grand Cherokee my wife drives, it has never been off pavement. My 2500 has 18" Rims because it spends 70% of its time off pavement and I pull with it also.

No worries, I appreciate the input. I picked the grabbers because of their really good winter rating.

Where I live, from October to April they made it mandatory in the mountains to have the All weather snowflake/mountain logo tires. (because of too many clueless idiots on summer tires here)

I was also looking at the Toyo OC AT3's tonight, I don't know how I missed them in my quest for tires haha. But they seem on par with the generals specs and they look a lot nicer.

My brother in law suggested getting the Maxxis RAZR AT's but I heard their sidewalls aren't very strong on the offroad tires.

JTB - not trying to hijack your thread, have a question that’s in your subject.

How much weight difference is there between 17” vs 20” rims? Currently have stock 20’s. Considering aftermarket rims when these tires need replacing. Just wondering how much less they weigh.

20's if primary towing, 17's if primary street or off pavement driving. Less sidewall on the 20s will firm them up for towing a bit better, 17's increased sidewall will be softer for street and off pavement driving.

Rim weight is entirely dependant on make and material. Two identical rims, one in 20x9 and one in 17x9 the 20" will generally be 5-8 Lbs heavier each. Tire choice will have a bigger effect on overall weight of the tire rim combination. In general however 20" rims and tires will come out about the same as 17" of the same diameter and width. 20s are generally heavier in real life because guys go taller and wider than they do with 17s.

While weight is a consideration, in regular use offset plays a bigger role. The further outboard the tires sit the more stress on the bearings and other running gear. Guys running 20s usually want spacers and aggressive offsets to make them look "MEAN". The cost for that is much more wear on your other components from pushing that weight out and giving it more leverage.

although you can alwasy drop to 17's and upgrade to D rated tires for towing and still have more sidewall fro thos hol crap was that a darn big pothole momments.

I have had RAMs with both 17s and 20s. I prefer the 20s BUT I would NOT get that second set you have in your pics. I buy and sell RAM wheels and I have sold a number of sets to people who are replacing them to go with the Gen 4 rims bc theirs crack. Your 17s are a good rim so it comes down to what you like and what you want to spend.

Thank you I appreciate the info, I had no idea that they were prone to cracking. I did find another set of those chrome 20's for $300 but after thinking about it for awhile, and taking some advice from here, Im ultimately going to stick with my 17's.

The tires are cheaper, look nicer on the 17, and I don't want to have to find a fifth 20" wheel and tire for the spare.

As for the tires, I have an appointment in a couple weeks to get a set of the Toyo AT3's put on.
I've had a few sets of the BFG's over the years on a couple different trucks and I need to change it up.

I've got 17's and really like the look better! Everyone and they brother has 20-22" wheels, and in my opinion it's overdone. Also, Jeeps are now stock with 285/70-17's. So you can find cheap used ones all over now. :)

Thank you. Somehow 20's with less rubber sell for more than 17/18's with the same tire height? They look **** to me.

My truck came with 20 in, and I also have 17 in with winter studded tires, I don't tow anymore, and try to stay on roads, other than the noise, I can't feel any difference
