What bench vise brands/models does anyone recommend? Need a sturdy model that has a very secure clamping system so the vice doesn't try to rotate when I'm hammering, prying, or pulling on the project. Most likely looking at 5-6 inch jaw width. Thanks.

I bought a 6" Craftsman bench vise, a good size quality vise, swivels and has pipe clamps.

I have a mastercraft on my home bench that's surprisingly sturdy for what I paid, but if I was going to use it a lot I'd buy a record vice. Can't say I wouldn't mind a wilton either.

Might want to check facebook market place for used name brand vise

I prefer the rectangle shaft over the round shaft vise.
Yes, being able to rotate the vise jaws is defintely handy

B U T

not wanting those jaws to rotate when I am cranking on whatever, is far more important, to me.

Insure your work bench is strong enough to support the vise.

For me, Vices are like Guns.

Unfortunately the vises in my more tolerable price range are not made here. Considering the following:
Wilton 675U Utility Bench Vise 5.5 inch: Amazon
Wilton WS5 Shop Bench Vise 5 inch: Amazon
Doyle 6 inch Swivel Vise: Harbor Freight but I'm found some good reviews on it

As others have said……Wilton.
Im partial to the bullet vises myself because that’s what I used for 30+ years at work.

Looked for a used Wilton Bullet for years with no success and finally found this pre WW2 Colombian that need some serious TLC.
Ive been very happy with it.

Don‘t overlook a 70’s vintage craftsman to get you started.
This on was my only vise for years and it’s changed probably 50 or more U joints.
Now I use it outside for cutting or dirty work

I’ve had the harbor freight for over 10 years. I work in construction for a living and have a state contractors license. So that’s an officially professional opinion.

I couldn't agree more with gofish about the heirloom passing down thing...we have 2 vices here at work...very old and I wouldn't trade them for anything and 2 newer ones(I don't care for them at all)..newer 2 only like 30yrs old...lol
I have a 6"Wilton at home...just don't seem to be the same as far as toughness, screw a little snug too.guess they don't make them like they use to...I prefer the yellow one in the pics( if I did it right )due to the swivel lock handle thing.

I’ve got an ancient Craftsman that was on my father’s work bench for as long as I can remember. It was old back then and probably was my grandfather’s.
