@Hemi395 found some video's and paper out there that mds actually lubricates the lifters better then when mds is off. I would read the threads in my sig, do a search, read the polls. If it was pushrods, I doubt with mds engaged would stop the tick, so it is possible a lubrication strategy would work. At the center of both strategies is the science of EP additives, in a lower lubrication application it is these additives and base oils that allow you to retain boundary lubrication. redline 5w30 with a rp 20-820 carries about an 80% success rate, lubegard biotech carries about a 50% success rate. Read the threads and view the polls, these forum developed strategies are proven by ram forum over a decade, the science of these additives have shown in many cases they take time and pressure to plate, so even if the tick isnt gone right away it is still possible 500 miles later it will go quiet. My ticks took 500 miles and then it was gone, and been gone now a decade with a couple self inflicted hickups. worth a shot?

Thanks for the encouragement. I have about 200 miles on it post Lubeguard. I guess I will try to be patient and wait. Maybe after a couple oil changes, it will subside. Anyone using synthetic 5W-30 Valvoline or other namebrand oil in their MDS hemi? I know Dodge says not to, but....

Update: 400 plus miles on engine after Lubeguard. Still have a Singer under the hood. (old reference for you younger kids). I got a CEL at idle last weekend, so I cleared it, rest the connector, and it hasn't come back. The problem I am feeling, is a chug at idle and under load. If I am at a light and slightly release brake pressure, the truck will lurch (not roll) forward in a manner that matches the chug I feel at idle. I have NO CEL at W.O.T., so I am baffled. There is definitely something going on. Could the slop in the lifters cause the valves not to open enough to allow this to happen? When it stops snowing, I am going to have to pull plugs. Also wonder if it is shorting out thru the boot. I had to get pretty rough with them when I changed the rocker shafts. Most of them stayed in the head. I dielectric greased them when they went back in. Is there a thing as too much dielectric grease?

oh yeah you can for sure. It will stop the spark from igniting the fuel. You should only put it below ceramic part of plus and when you plug it only push the plug in once and if you mess it up pull it and clean it. Very possible too much DEG will do a mis fire.

Out of curiousity what lifters did he put in it. Some lifters like Engine Tech lifters have a very poor rep in the hemi

I believe they were oem Mopar lifters. It's either number 4 or 6. I have a feeling a short block is in my future. If I lose a second cam, that would be way too much metal thru the internals.

I'm not saying that is why you are having a mis fire, just that it is for sure possible. GL

Just got it done. Problem solved. More qustions raised. Cyl 5 plug electrode ceramic broken and dropped. Cyl 4 electrode bent with about 0.080 gap.Wonder how that happens....hmmm? Chug is gone. Creeps easy when I let up on brake.

never seen one like that, off center w/o being smashed, any ideas how? The manu in our suv over toqued the plugs and smashed them because of piston clearance. Funny didnt even know til 30k miles when I did her tune up, I have no idea how that thing ran so good with zero gap, lol. Never mis fired but those two pistons were slimed up as hell.

Keep an eye on them ,and see if you have the plug issue arise again. The bent ground strap almost looks like installer error, and the one missing the center electrode, makes me wonder if it was cheap chinese copy cat plug,as they're fairly common these days, with NGK's being one of the ones they're copy catting.

I'm 100% sure bent strap was installer derived. I installed those plugs shortly after I got the truck. They are NGK plugs. I also came up with 1 different coil pack. Odd. I had 8 matching coils when I took it for cam work. Mechanic a real piece of work. Won't ever go back to him. If you screw up, you own up. Funny thing; he won't return my calls.
