What engine oil do you use in a 5.7 Hemi (non-eTorque)?

Really, someone had to ask the question….. hasn’t this been beaten enough??

Bring out the RP fan boys…
I’m just glad it’s still open for discussion on this forum. I belong to several other Mopar forums and if someone brings up anything related to oil, and I mean practically any engine related fluid for that matter they’re pretty much burned at the stake on the spot. Some of the most vocal critics of even mentioning such an innocent three letter word are actually members here who I won’t mention of course.

I don’t even own a Ram anymore but I’ve remained a member here because this forum is so much more open than all of the others. That being said I switched my new to me 21 Charger R/T over to Valvoline Extended Protection 5W30 the day after I bought it at 29K miles. So you can say I’m definitely a believer.

These discussions become nearly religious. But i want to make three key points:

1. 5W30 is not only approved but specified for severe service by Chrysler document MS6395. Towing is severe service. I use Big Brand 5W30 full synthetic.
2. Most oils are more similar than one would imagine from reading here. The base oil suppliers are few, and the majority of additives from 2-3 suppliers, primarily Lubrizol. They are all excellent. Change before they shear down or additives are depleted. BTW i do periodic analysis on my track car and you might be surprised how well it holds up.
3. Thick is not always better protection. You need a suffici8ent volume to float a bearing. Get the right oil for the temperatures and conditions.

And then dont agonize. There are better things to do to prolong your truck's life, adn the motor is unlikely to be the weak point anyway

I still can't believe that in this day and age, a manufacturer can't figure out how to PROPERLY supply oil to the cam and lifters........or at least that is what a lot of people on here say is the problem. No, excessive idling was never the "best" thing for a gasoline internal combustion engine, but the "don't idle it very long" remarks absolutely baffle me. It isn't uncommon here where I live for people to go through one, two, three cycles of the remote start to get ALL MAKES of vehicles unfrosted (especially since my 2019 Classic 5.7 is extremely cold blooded and takes a long time to warm up), and work trucks idle for hours each day in the winter, and idle way more than that in Northern Alberta on job sites.
Technology Advancement??????????

Once it gets down to -30C or colder,my company GM never gets shut off,it'll idle all night long.Company won't pay the electric bill to plug it in,but they have no problem buying the gas,lol

I just bought a new 2022 1500 Laramie late December, and after driving from St. Louis to Orlando and back I have 3500 miles in it. I’ve always used Mobile 1. What do y’all use in your Hemis?
I use Mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic 5W20 along with a Mobil 1 filter ... Never had any problems ... If I need an alternative if Mobil 1 is not available, I use Castrol extended performance ... I've used this oil in all 3 of the RAMS i owned ...

If you want to save money on Mobile 1, buy it at WallyMart. I haven't found anyone that can beat their price.

2016 Ram 1500 5.7 4wd with 108k, full syn, currently Shell Rotella Gas Truck, but whatever’s on sale. Always stick with a quality oil filter specifically with OEM extended capacity out to 10 k, but I have tried to stick to 5 k OCF. Currently 108 k on truck and just back from a 7500 mile coast to coast road trip. Never have had to add a drop in between, and no funny noises or abnormal anything. Recent lab results showed all systems go, no unusual metals, fuels or debris after the 8800 miles I ran the oil and filter incident to this latest trip, probably had at least 30% of additive package still present. It has been similar in other lab analysis at 25 k and 60 k miles.

I recently switched over to RL 5W30 and the RP 20-820 oil filter from the PUP 5W20 and either MOPAR or Delco oil filters, and I've got 120,000Km's on my 19'.

The brain trust in this forum were very correct in this recommendation, and I am not snake oil farmer either!

I'm now almost 6,000Km's in on this first round with the better oil and filter and I can tell you that even though my HEMI never ticked before, there is a discernable improvement on overall engine sound at idle and at WOT, and in overall performance feel as well.

I was changing my oil and filter religiously at 6,000Km's before, and with the new oil and filter I'll take it to 8,000Km's (5,000 miles) because I can do it with confidence knowing my engine has far better protection now than it did before.

Is it worth the added costs (and those that have read my posts previously know it was exorbitantly expensive to bring in the RL and RP combo from the USA to Ontario, Canada) to go this route; indeed it is!

I don't need an engineering spec sheet to show me that this new combo is providing positive benefits to my HEMI!

Im sure the CRITERIA they use is completely immersing themselves into the platform. By getting in there and busting their knuckles and cussing, trying new ideas, failing and succeeding, right along side all the other owners that are concerned with their HEMIs performance and longevity.
Perhaps SAE should adopt those criteria instead of the peer-reviewed, established ones.
