On my 2017 there is no option in the lighting settings to turn off the daytime running lights.
Is there another way to turn them off?

Or search AlphaOBD drl ramforum.com

The link above provides the directions to add a switch into the radio to disable DRL. I would expect you could also use the information from that post to disable them permanently using AlphaOBD, if that is your preference.

Also in your research, you'll find that not all trucks have them. My '17 Sport doesn't have DRLs or the button to select them. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

If you look on the first post of the AlfaOBD thread there's a "Known Working List" that has the settings to give you the option for turning the DRLs On/Off from the radio.

as I stated in my previous post, you can enable that option with AlfaOBD
If you don't want to use AlfaOBD, there is a product called Tazer Ram which gives you options to turn the DRLs On/Off

DRL's are a good thing why turn off

It's a no-brainer in my mind, some of the drivers don't even notice vehicles with lights on but the turn signal DRL lights do provide better visibility.

Whenever I drive on the 401, all lights are on, especially approaching dusk.

Too many fools are too preoccupied with phones and their personal existence to notice half the drivers on the road.

I want to be visible if it will help prevent a collision and especially my involvement in said collision.

I'm actually pleased to see Transport Canada legislation that will force manufacturers to have tail-lights on always too.

I posted that information in post #6 of this thread.

Also, most vehicles automatically switch from DRL to headlights far too late, I've always thought driving near dusk is a complete circus on the road.

The Ram trucks seem to be much better than average for switching the headlights on automatically but I've covered the light sensor in my truck to force the switch to happen a bit sooner.

Agreed, so many cars/trucks have a **** poor auto-light function. Don't come on till it's pitch dark. Or like alot of the Nissans I see, their gauge lights come on separately from the headlights and they have those insanely bright DRLs so those morons are just driving around after dark thinking their lights are on.

I do the same as @RamDiver, I turn my lights any time it's foggy/at dusk/raining/anything less than sunny conditions. Actually, I run around with my lights on most of the time anyway just cuz I like the way it looks

Its a good thing if they use the correct bulb. Correct bulb being either the fog lights or a dedicated DRL bulb (think of GMT800 Chevy trucks). Most of these trucks are configured with no DRL, low beam DRL (at reduced brightness) or turn signal DRL (if equipped with projector headlights). The low beam bulb is the worst bulb to use as the DRL, as you need it to drive at night without blinding others. If someone only drives at in the day and burns out their low beam bulbs with their DRLs, they are screwed if they need to drive at night. Also, low beam DRLs can literally melt the wiring harness to the bulb if the bulb is out and doesn't get replaced. It happened to my friend after I sold him my old 2005 Toyota Corolla with a dead headlight. He never bothered to replace the bulb until like 1 or 2 years after buying the car and found the pigtail to be melted when he went to replace the bulb. The old Corolla used the low beam bulb as the DRL. The turn signal bulb is an awful bulb to use because it burns out the turn signal bulb much faster and can create safety hazards at a stop sign, where someone may use the turn signals to judge right of way. These trucks can also be configured with a high beam DRL, though that has an issue because it makes flashing other motorists less visible.

That just leaves the fog lights on these trucks. Fog lights are not required by the US (and I don't think Canada requires them either). The fog lights aren't necessary to see at night and do very little over the low beams to see in the fog. I do not consider a them a safety bulb because they aren't useful for daily driving. I actually do have the fog light DRL enabled on my truck (originally had no DRLs when I got the truck). Fog light DRLs also have the benefit that you can turn off your headlights in a neighborhood and you don't shine a headlight beam into people's houses while being able to see and be seen.

I am in Canada also, rather than disabling mine, I changed them to the running light/signals. I like the look of no headlights with just the running lights on.

Physically impossible as once the bulb burns out there is no current going through the wiring to burn up the wiring. More likely the bulb socket was making a bad connection which caused excessive heat and melted the socket up until the bulb went bad.

most veh use the high beam as the DRL

I cannot see for the life of me why people want to disable these? they are hurting nothing and increase safety. I know depending on where you are in Canada they will impound your veh until it passes a safety inspection and give a fine for running with no DRL's
