I have a 2022 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi - not the etorque engine- I get 16 mpg-
Is there anything that can be done to increase gas mileage?
Jim
So, you have a 6000lb truck with a v8 engine and want better gas millage? Rofl, be happy. An old school v8 in a 6000lb truck would be getting about 9mpg on a good day. 16 is fantastic. If you have to have a truck but want decent millage, go electric. Deisle is an option, better mpg, but higher fuel cost so not better on the wallet.I have a 2022 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi - not the etorque engine- I get 16 mpg-

My 2018 RAM 2500 4x4 gets 12 in town. At 77 mph 16 or so, at 70 mph up to 18, 65 mph I have seen 20 but not regularly. I am talking average of a full tank of gasoline. I am happy with that mpg considering what I am driving. My mini van only averages 23 maybe 24 mpg at best on the flat running 70 to 75. The 5.7 Challenger RT at 72 will usually get 24 mpg.If you think thats crappy milage, you should have bought a 2500 with the 6.4l V8...
Why use 89 octane when 87 works just as well. Same mpg and performance.I got 14-15 mpg overall on my '19 non-eTorque HEMI (14 mpg in the winter and 15 mpg on summer blend). I had the off-road package and lots of options so it was a heavy truck.
The only things you can do without getting too far down the rabbit hole (or selling the truck) is:
1. Highway compound tires and keep them at/near max psi.
2. Anticipate lights (don't race up to the red light and jam on your brakes).
3. Accelerate briskly. Don't be Mario Andretti but don't be a grandma either. A generous accelerator up to cruising speed (~3000 RPMs...maybe a little more if you're getting on the highway/freeway) actually helps fuel economy compared to easing on to speed like there's an egg under the gas pedal.
4. Use at least 89 octane unleaded.
5. Get a cheap tri-fold tonneau to cover the bed.
I got some good bang for the buck with #3 (maybe 1 mpg overall) but driving conditions change all the time so, even though you think you are reproducing conditions from before, you aren't.
I did drive a few tanks driving how I wanted and enjoying my V-8. I lost less than 1 mpg overall just enjoying the truck.
Just my .02
MPGs maybe. Performance I disagree.
Whether you notice is or not the knock sensors will retard the timing to prevent pinging, which delays spark, which delays detonation, which results in a shorter power stroke, which ends up being less power.
Your driving may not make a difference that you can see, feel, or hand-calculate, but it's there.
Costco 91 is cheaper than local 89 (Top Tier) around me so I come out ahead on that front. As for 87 I don't run it but that's a personal preference...YMMV.
I didn't want to switch between octanes at fill-up or fill up at 1/2 tank and alternate 87 and 91 each time. I got the 33-gallon tank to stretch my station visits.
Smart move, waste of money, or just a panacea who knows. For me that's what I wanted to do and I could afford it then so wasn't a big deal.
If I still had the truck it would be on a diet of 91 octane regardless.
Please just get a second job to pay for the gas. 6000 lbs and 385 hp!!. When will the gas mpg question go away!I have a 2022 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi - not the etorque engine- I get 16 mpg-
