My 2020 1500 5.7 4x4 with 3.92 gears, gets 17-18 mpg around town, and 19.5-20 mpg Hwy. Running 74 mph max. I'm thinking the gear ratio around town helps get up to speed easier without needing much gas peddle. Plus I run tier 1 fuel only. Tier 1 fuel has 30% more fuel system cleaner in it versus standard grade cheap stuff. I'm using 87 octain only. Not recommended 89 ect. I read and seen demos on TV where you generally get more horse power from 87 versus 89 and 93 octain. They say octain is tied to anti-knock additives, not more horse power. High compression engines Run hard use higher octain to prevent pre-detination/knock ect. I don't horse my engine, but do pull a 4,000 lb. Boat occasionally. I get 12 mpg pulling boat in town/interstate at 60 to 65 mph. I have a bed cover as well. I try to time the lights through town. It takes 70% +/- more fuel to get started versus just cruising. I run standard size tires. Plus, in case you didn't know, when you go to buy tires, the weight of each manufacturer's tires weigh as much as 15 lbs. Difference. All this said play into my fuel economy. Plus I don't keep extra junk in the truck. Hope that helps a little.

You have another sticker that gives you payload capacity. Take your GVWR and subtract the "combined weight of occupants and cargo..." number and that will give you weight of truck full of all fluids; your base weight Anything you add from driver to gear goes against payload number.

Things to do to get max mpg have mostly been stated:. Drive at or below speed limit, take everything out of truck and drive at half tank or less of gas. Keep tires properly inflated. No jackrabbit starts and let off gas when approaching red lights. Everything you can do to increase mpg is free. Higher grade gas (computer just adjusts to compensate for incorrect grade), bed covers (no real impact to wind but adds weight so negates any possible impact), etc. all cost but won't do anything.

You have a truck, it sucks for drag coefficient numbers, is heavy, engine designed for power, rear end designed for pulling; but that is the nature of the beast.

Yep, my 2wd 2003 2500 lb cc with 5.7 3.73s got 22 to 25 mpg, kept track at one time.

Honestly, and me included, kind of pointless for 4wd on trucks that are highway use almost all the time. Kind of like SUVs in my area, I know people who never used 4wd all the years they have owned them, and that is a rather large number. I have used 4wd 2x in 4 years. I have 4wd now because my wife wanted it, I was ready to buy another 2wd unit but couldn't get her to agree. Oh well, I still love my truck, but I push a bunch of mechanicals for no reason.

MPGs maybe. Performance I disagree.

Whether you notice is or not the knock sensors will retard the timing to prevent pinging, which delays spark, which delays detonation, which results in a shorter power stroke, which ends up being less power.

Your driving may not make a difference that you can see, feel, or hand-calculate, but it's there.

Costco 91 is cheaper than local 89 (Top Tier) around me so I come out ahead on that front. As for 87 I don't run it but that's a personal preference...YMMV.

I didn't want to switch between octanes at fill-up or fill up at 1/2 tank and alternate 87 and 91 each time. I got the 33-gallon tank to stretch my station visits.

Smart move, waste of money, or just a panacea who knows. For me that's what I wanted to do and I could afford it then so wasn't a big deal.

If I still had the truck it would be on a diet of 91 octane regardless.
Master Chief, if I was towing heavy, I would use the 89 . For my daily driving I’ll stick with 87.

I have a 2017 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi and live eastcoast NC. 30,000 miles My around town mileage averages 20 mpg. and on the highway I approach 25. Of course I am light on the pedal and try to keep it in the eco range.

Another note, that average mpg readout on the cluster is wrong. At least in my truck. I run 1mpg below readout vs hand calculated. Averaging 14.5 mpg but I drive hard and fast. I average 85 to 90 mph in the highway. Hemi gets to 106 incredibly quick.

I had a 0215 Ram CC with the 3.21 gears, 2 wheel drive,, I easily got 20 to 22 mpg on the hiway running about 70 to 71 mph and 16 to 17 in the city. I had a 2019 Ram 1500 CC, 2 wheel drive with the 3.92 gears. On the road I averaged 19 mpg, sometimes 20mpg, at 70 t0 71 mph and 16 around town. These are figured by hand.

I try to drive at a reduced speed on the Interstate. Over the years I have found that topping out at 65 gains somewhere in the vicinity of a 20% improvement. Didn't matter what make or model.
My 2016 always gets me above 20 and on a recent trip to Phoenix I averaged over 25.

Sure, tie a bunch of balloons to your right foot.

Oh, and use top tier gas, drive on flat roads at 50-55 MPH, keep your tailgate closed, tires inflated to 2 PSI over recommended, remove the 2000# gold bar out of the bed. Keep the windows closed and A/C off. Draft 18 wheelers. Tape all your panel seams. Engage Aero mode. Build a dome over your normal commute and introduce a partial vacuum in it. Add a turbocharger.

Even with all the secondary suggestions, the first is most important.

I just traded it straight up for a fully loaded 2023 Honda Ridgeline and they gave me $3000 cash in my pocket. I now have all the options back that were MIA on the ram due to chip shortage.
Really? Meaning you can haul your three kids and all their pool toys in one trip?

I have no doubt the Ridgeline is a great "thing" - it's a Honda, after all. Very few failures in their court. But not sure if it's more properly called a Car, an SUV or a (very) light Truck. But comparing it to even a 1500/150 is no more relevant than comparing a Miata to a Boxster.

Is that governed? I've never had mine near that (honest, officer!).

Really, to be honest, I haven't. Though I did have my '79 Chevy K10 SB/Stepside (on 33x12.50 tires - which were somewhat large for the time) up to about 120 one time. Emphasis on the One Time...

Today, yes today, April24, I drove 135 round trip miles and registered 24.4 miles going and 20.5 returning. I did mostly highway driving in Belize and navigated through Belize City for an appointment. You might say,"Really! Come on there".

I filled up before going and filled up at the same station upon my return with regular gas, the pump registers 8.29 gallons --- filled up as always to the two clicks on the pump nozzle. My odometer read a range of over 470 miles to empty when I left the station.

All this to say my 2016 Ram Big Horn 5.7L, 4X4, 3.21 rear differential having 82352 miles on the odometer and is regularly serviced as specified. Also, I do live in Belize and the highways do have pedestrian crossway with speed bumps to slow all the traffic to a crawl. So it is slow and go, speed and slow down to a crawl every so often.

I keep my Ram maintained. Gas prices are $12.62 BZ per gallon ($6.32 US per gallon).

Curious, do you have 3:21 gearing?
Also, reg gas vs ethanol? Thanks

Lucky you. There are only a couple of "pure" gas stations left in my area and none of them are near me.

Everything around here is "up to 10% ethanol"...including Costco.
