If you’re buying these trucks at these prices, you’re a fool!
Market conditions might have a bigger influence on buying new or used and not necessarily someone's uncommon sense.
In late 2021, I suddenly became aware that my 2007 Tundra was going to cost between $5K & $7K to keep it on the road and I'd still have a 14-year-old truck that should have been religiously undercoated every year. I dropped the ball on that.
I shopped intensely for a pre-enjoyed truck and was getting close to pulling the trigger when I heard of a local FCA dealer that was providing incentives to help clear new '21s.
With all the discounts and not even considering the cost of shuffling 2 sets of tires on rims, and installing side step bars and skid plates, which were completed for no charge, I paid about $5K to $6K more than I would have paid for buying a used 2 or 3-year old truck with 35K to 50K miles.
Plus, my new Ram included a 5-year 60,000-mile extended warranty.
I looked south of the border when I was shopping for a used truck and prices didn't seem magnificently better in the US. Of course, I only looked at Upstate NY because that's close to where I live.
I feel that I was foolish to not keep up with the undercoating of my Tundra but I'm pretty happy with my new Ram purchase in January 2022. The used truck market here is still insanely expensive.
BTW, this is the only new vehicle I've ever purchased besides multiple motorcycles in the 80s.
