Anyone running 285/70 on OEM 17" rims?

I am wanting to put 285/70's on my OEM 17 inch rims. I just found out that these rims are only 7 inches wide, and 285's require a minimum rim width of 7.5 inches. I really like the look of the rim, and don't want to replace with an aftermarket for only 1/2 inch difference. If anyone has run this set up, I'd like to know if you had any issues ( balancing, rubbing, handling, wear etc).

I had 285/70/17 on the stock 17X7 rims and hated the handling.

I don't know if it was the Michelin Defenders with the 7" width or what, but it gave a dangerous feeling from the rear if you hit a bump around a bend or hit the brakes hard on a sharp turning maneuver. (such as if you were trying to dodge something on the road)
Best I can describe it was sidewall squirm - the tread stayed planted on the ground but the wheel would move sideways with the sidewall - you could see it if you pushed sideways on the truck.

Went to 20's and the stock 275/60/20 tire and never looked back - handling improved 200% just with this change.

That's interesting you had squirming tires possibly due to sidewall height.

Do you recall what tire pressure you were using?

I'm going to guess it would have felt more stable with an E-rated BFG KO2 or something similar.

That's a great teaching moment concept that I hadn't considered. Thanks

These were E-Load Michelin Defenders 285/70/17 and I ran the pressure anywhere from 45 - 70 psi - strangely it didn't change the ride or handling much at all from low to high.
The Defenders do have a soft sidewall - which is why they ride so well.

Maybe if I had more of an offroad tire, it wouldn't have been so bad.

It was really an unnerving feeling, but to be honest the tread held the road (this was mostly 55 mph and up), felt like about a 2" side movement.

Springs were the tufftruck 1211's, so it wasn't a rolling movement.

I could duplicate the side movement by pushing on the bed by hand and watch the rim/sidewall move in and out about an 1"+.

Drove it for over a year that way, when I put the 20X9 wheels on and stock tires it was like I jumped into a Porsche as far as handling. lol

E-rated and still flexing at 70 psi? I don't think the KO2s will flex at 70 psi, must be a Defender feature.
BFGs a pretty stiff ride at 45 psi but I don't have quite that much sidewall with 245/75/17.

Oh, so the sideways shimmy only happened above 55 mph. LOL

Ya, that doesn't sound like much fun especially if you're playing in the twisties at that speed. :insane:

Sure sounds like a tire / brand - specific issue to me. I've run that size on stock and aftermarket wheels in Goodyear, Nitto and Kenda without issue on the Power Wagon.

The stock Goodyears on factory 2018 PW wheels were the ones with the most mushy sidewall deflection on the road. And the most noisy of them all as well.

It did it at any speed but was just unnerving at high speed.
Doing 70+ mph on I70 in the rockies and going around a bend and hit a bump or hole while in traffic just wasn't fun hahaha.

It may have been the tire, but I like my rim width to be closer to the tread width - with a section width of 11.5" and a tread width of 8.8", I think it was mainly just too narrow of a wheel for the tire - esp. a soft tire.

Thanks for the info Pacofortacos. I was considering putting on the P rated Toyo open country at3’s but now I’m leaning back to the heavier KO2’s.

A lot of people seem to run the larger tire just fine, that was just my experience and I don't really go off road at all.

Maybe you can find both tires locally and just feel how soft each side wall is.

Or if you can find a set of Rebel wheels, those would be perfect as they come from the factory fitted with 285/70/17's.

I'm running 285/70-17 E on Rebel 17x8 wheels at 40psi since 2016. Never had a problem of any kind. As paco said, that's the same size Toyos the Rebels came with from factory

I run 285/70-17 on factory steel wheels. Rides fine, normally around town I’m set at 54 psi all four corners. I’m in a 2500 4x4.

I think my E rated ko2’s are pretty smooth at 50 psi + / -

I've been on 285/70/17 E-rated KOs for 3 or 4 years and 25k miles. They handle great. I run around 40-42 psi. The tire doesn't give any appearance that they are too wide for the rim. Next go around I'll step up to 285/75s, or if I can find a good deal on Rebel rims I may get them and step up to 315/70s. I carry kayaks and a bed full of camping gear frequently and I've never had a handling issue related to the tires.

I also ran 285/70 KOs on a 2008 Ram 1500 for 40k miles with the steel 17x7 rims, but these were the D-rated versions. I never had any handling issues with that truck either, even when pulling some heavy trailers. The D-rated tires did have a little bulging look to me due to the less rigid sidewall than the E-rated has, but I never felt they handled poorly.

I ran 285/70's on the factory 17 X 7" rims and liked them. Still have 2 of these rims left over,if you're interested, they're located in Airdrie.

285/70/17 E-rated KOs

My uncle is debating whether to get either another set of P-rated Open Country AT3 toyo tires or E-rated KOs. He recently retired so he's looking to load more stuff like bikes and kayaks.

I have about 400 miles on a new set of Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx in 295/70/R18 and I also have that squirmy sidewall issue when turning sharply. It almost feels like the rear end is kicking out. Could this be due to the tires being new? A body roll issue with my shocks??
