Does anyone else but me think there are way too many electronics in today's vehicles?

Yea, we yell about texting and driving and putting your phone down but then we stick an ipad on the dash you can play with while you drive.
And make you run everything with it so you have to take your eyes off the road to adjust it. I really miss buttons and switches for everything. Once you learn the layout you could do it all by feel without taking eyes off the road.

I picked up my 2016 Ram on January 16, 2016

I asked where they moved the shifter, although i knew the answer

It has been over 7 years & when i reach for the radio, & i grab a round knob that is too big to be the radio, then i take my eyes off the road, to find the correct knob.
I still dislike it.

I’m 60, don’t consider myself a techie and like the electronics on my 2018 Big Horn. Once I learned the layout of the dash and 8.4 system it’s all pretty intuitive to me. I don’t have the real fancy stuff like lane assist, automatic braking or even the little mirror indicators that alert you to a vehicle alongside. It’s a comfortable truck with just the right amount of gizmos for me.

My cars are 02, 06, and the lowest trim 13 ram, none of which even has reverse cameras till I installed them. Meanwhile my wife’s palisade is the star ship enterprise lol. I like the analog experience but that could be my age

I received an offer from FCA, to be involved in the future vehicle development opinion polling. My god have they got even more stuff they are thinking, to try an implement into the infotainment system. They were asking if I wanted PC desktop features like outlook, calendar, google, alexa functions built in. And how much per month, or year I was willing to pay for these added apps and features. This next generation has grown up on this, and me I am find a lot of the stuff very distracting while trying to drive.

I am not a technophobe, but I think there are just way too many electronics in today's vehicles and they are the source of a lot of the issues discussed here. My wife bought a 2021 Outback after her previous 2014 Outback was rear ended in a freeway accident. She loved her previous vehicle, but hates the new one as there are just too many "nanny state" electronics that drive her crazy, that she cannot turn off.

On my 2022 4x4 Diesel Ram, I have all the annoying stuff turned off, but the truck regularly hiccoughs with some type of electronic issue. Last week, the touch screen system was blank for a day. Now it's back. Yesterday, Car Play stopped working for some unknown reason.

Short of buying an older used vehicle, there's just no way around this garbage that I can discern. It's extremely annoying.
I’m a CSCE by training, engineer by trade, and after a 30 year career I think we have too many complex systems everywhere.

Truly a case of keeping up with the Jones and FOMO vs good design based on the right blend of function, value and simplicity. Every day you have a mixture of gadgets not working at all, not working together, upstream dependencies like the Internet being unreliable, etc. My family and friends don’t understand how a certified technologist can be a Luddite. Just work with this crap your whole life and all your worst fears will be confirmed.

Love my 17 2500 0ffroad 4x4 Tradesman, as about low tech as you can get in this era.
Got a 96 Mustang GT convertible, easy to repair and diagnose. Same with 99 Toyota Camry, and my 64 Mercury Comet.
Saw mid 2000's crew cab 4x4s on Mecham auctions quite affordable.

As a Master Automotive technician with 47 years of experience, I'll say yes, that there are WAY too many electronics. I personally have zero need for most of them. A car is, for me, a tool to get me to places where I can't walk to get to or ride a bike. I have been driving 51 years as of this month (legally) LOL! To me, nothing about the utilitarian aspect of a car has changed, but, I don't need to be entertained 24/7/365 like so many folks believe they do.

Many of my customers DO keep much older cars for pragmatic reasons. Almost all of them can afford a new car, but don't do it.

Most electronics are the result of government mandates...Back up cams, emission controls, air pressure monitors, etc....If you don't think the government is controlling yourlife too much, look again.
They're actually called government regulations, not mandates. I guess the end result is the same though. I'm no fan of most of them, but some of the older regulations for safety like seat belts and air bags make sense to me. But I think most of the gadgets in cars now are because the majority of people want them. At least as of now there are no regulations for having a large touch screen, lane sense, blind spot detection, surround view cameras, bluetooth, wifi, SriusXM, cellular network connection, etc. So in the end we mostly have consumers to thank for this. I myself can live with my vehicle having these things as long as I can turn them off.

As a younger guy and a computer nerd (Literally in college for Computer Science and work in IT) I hate what they're doing to cars. After looking at all the identical "minimalist TV-screen" dashboard design that every single new car has nowadays, I don't think I'll be owning anything much newer than what I have now unless something changes

It's made me real appreciative of my '06. No screens, a nice mostly-non-electronic* column shifter, an actual key you have to turn, etc. The last thing I want to do after I've worked on computer problems for 10 hours a day is to get in my truck and deal with MORE electronic problems

HighDesertRam, I absolutely agree. Way too much! New stuff overloaded with electronics and just more to break and VERY expensive to fix!!!

We want to drive and enjoy our trucks (and cars) without so much other crap tacked on!
