It has been quite the project and learning experience, lots of good info on Youtube but didn't find anyone talking about this specific issue I had with the CAD bushing and bearing.
Here are a few pictures:
The CAD was completely dry when I opened it up.
- Replaced plastic bushing which I set in RTV silicone to fill the wear gap, the bushing centers due to the back setting snuggly where intermediate axle wasn't making contact. (Maybe JB weld or something would be better so am considering redoing...
I have wanted to do the swap but heard it is a real hassle, it is good to hear that it is not as bad as you initially though. Or is it now at this point? I have a 98' with the v8 5.9 which I think is the same engine, the transmission will most likely go out if I keep driving it like I have.
You have got to understand how a differential works then it makes sense. If one side is disconnected then only the spider gears spin, driveline and ring gear will not spin. If CAD is disconnected when truck is rolling forward then driveline will not spin. Also, the inner axle on passenger side...
There is a video you need to watch! I just watched it, and finally understand how differentials work. All that the CAD does is eliminate movement in the driveshaft going from transmission to differential and from one big gear in differential called the ring gear.
Hi, Did you figure it out? I posted a while ago about a very similar noise on my 98' 1500. I think the issue is in the Center Axle Disconnect or CAD for short.
Update: My 4x4 is no longer working and the clanking went away. Whatever was rattling around in there has stopped rattling around, I checked the vacuum lines at the CAD and I think the suction is plenty good.
I think I figured it out, basically the section of axle between Center Axle Disconnect and passenger side U-joint is moving around worse when turning right. Something in there near the CAD is supposed to hold in it place but instead it is knocking against axle housing.
I have the same Issue, what did you end up finding out?
Jacking it up I am finding the noise is definitely coming from the cv axle on passenger side. I also found it does make some noise while wheel is straight but have not heard it while driving straight.

For the past week or two when I make a hard right turn I have been hearing a clanking noise coming from Passenger side CV axle, today I jacked it up and turned the wheel all the way to the right and it is definitely looks like the CV axle is wobbling near housing and sound is coming from axle...
