    4.7 l problems

I'd call you a glutton for punishment swapping engines left and right like that. But to answer your question - no, I didn't bore it out. I just honed the cylinders is all. As far as connecting rods goes - are you building anything special or just doing a rebuild? If you aren't building for...

    OEM/Factory Radio No Workie...

Well, I checked the harness today over lunch and didn't find any fuse going into the harness where that other thread indicated. I'm thinking there may have been some changes between 2005 and the 2010+ trucks. I appreciate the lead though!

    OEM/Factory Radio No Workie...

Thanks for the reply. I saw that thread already but discounted that as a possibility when I saw it was for a 8.4 system since mine is much older and had a tape deck. But you're prob right. I should look for that fuse anyway.

02 4.7 ground strap behind head

It's not attached in the firewall. I just finished putting a 4.7L engine in. The far end of that braided cable attaches to one of the 10mm studs on the underside of the transmission tunnel on the passenger side above the exhaust down pipe.

    OEM/Factory Radio No Workie...

Hey fellas, I'm in the process of "restoring" a 2005 Ram 1500 SCSB truck that I picked up with a blown motor. Now that I've replaced the motor with one I rebuilt and got it running great, I'm starting to try to delve into some of the other issues. The foremost issue for me right now is the OEM...

    4.7 l problems

when I just rebuilt a 4.7L that had 180k miles on it, every piston had at least one stuck ring, if not all of them stuck in their grooves. I struggled to get them out. But I was replacing the pistons in the rebuild so I didn't try too hard. Not sure what you could do to try to get them freed up...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

You are 100% right, the guy I got the PCM/harness/etc from (who I am meeting tomorrow to get the ABS module) is having a hell of a time going from the 4.7 to the Hemi. He's got it running, but the truck has so many codes it's driving him nuts. The transmission is in limp mode, the ABS module...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Well, my dumb ass was right, the high-idle was caused by the open port in the rear of the intake that is meant to be attached to the PCV. What a COMPLETE and utter pain in the rear to get to though - I had to completely remove the intake to get to it. Pain in the butt. It did fix the issue...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Ahh, I think I may have figured out my high-idle issue - I did a search on high-idle issues with a 4.7 and it appears a leaking PCV hose may cause the high-idle condition. Well, I had not yet figured out the routing of the PCV, so it's just sitting there, open-ended. So yeah...duh. I'll try to...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Well more good news! The new oxygen sensors arrived today and they cleared the O2 codes. I also bought some MAF spray cleaner and sprayed it on the sensor, which cleaned a lot of the soot/dirt from it. I figured that would clear the code. And it did, for awhile. I took it on a short drive and it...

    Junkyard block

Not sure, I've never been to San Antonio. I just saw that they had a location in San Antonio when I was looking up their services on their website.

    Junkyard block

Hey you're a lucky guy - there is another branch location of City Motor Supply in San Antonio, TX. I'd go there. Also, see my note in the private message response I sent to you - if you have a decked head on that 4.7L, then you may need to run pistons with a reduced crown. Best make sure you...

    Any AC guru's in here?

Don't rule out that it's low without checking. I completely replaced my entire A/C system in my '87 Jeep Wagoneer XJ and less than a year later I was getting the same issue. Defect in the refrigerant line crimp allowed it to slowly leak down over time. I'd put money down that you're low on...

The Strangest Leak I've Ever Seen!

Is it oil residue? Try cleaning it with acetone and seeing if it returns.

I agree, that shop is being ridiculous. I assume you'll be using new wrist pins as well new rod bearings, why they hell should they care? Or just send them to City Motor Supply in Dallas and they'll do it for you for $92 out the door with a 1 day turnaround.

04 Ram 1500 4.7, exhaust bolt coolant leak

I just finished rebuilding a 4.7L and there is a passage in the Haynes Manual, page 2A-12, paragraph 16 that reads, "...if you're working on a right-side exhaust manifold on a 4.7L engine, refill the cooling system". I can infer from this that the 4.7L has at least one bolt that runs through a...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Well, all in so far, including the truck, I'm at $2,832; but I've not actually gotten to the body work yet, so it'll go up, but probably not past $3,500 total. As far as the swap, knowing what I know now, I could have shaved some of the cost off, but all-in-all, it wasn't too expensive...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

That's very interesting. Honestly, I've never thought much about the technology behind O2 sensors, but your comments have me intrigued, so I'm going to have to learn myself up on them. However, so the Plot Thickens, as they like to say... Because of issue between the 2004 and 2005 harnesses...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Just checked the numbers and you are correct - your memory seems to serve you quite well! Now just out of complete curiosity - what the heck would be the difference between the four O2 sensors for two engines that are essentially the same (with 2 fewer/more cylinders)? Would the a/f mixture...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Well, I have some good freakin' news; the new (replacement) wiring harness worked! I now have a running/driving truck with a 4.7L conversion. Really happy about that. I gotta admit though - I'm am utterly *perplexed* by what the issue really was between the two harnesses. Based on the pin-out...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Fishstickz, I think you're right. Ole boy just ain't feelin' it for some reason, dammit. You're definitely correct about the interchangeability of the '04-05 gauges and '06-08 gauges, that's a no go. But even another step further, in the FSMs, under the "Instrument Cluster" section in...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Morning gents, Been a few weeks since my last update. Made some good progress - finished the rebuild of the 4.7L, but then had a real pain of a time trying to get a wiring harness that would work properly. Then I had to wrestle the damn thing into the truck. turns out the engine mounts for...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Man, I'm sorry, but I didn't. Not much to look at though, about a 2x3 piece was already missing and a few other spots where the paint was starting to lift, but was still present. I think once it starts to go it likely happens pretty fast. I still don't know why they thought this was a good idea...

'05 3.7L Overheated & Seized - What to do next?

Welp, the old 4.7L is back from the machine shop along with the rebuilt (again) head. Put the short block together this weekend: And let me tell you all...stripping the paint from the inside of this damn oil pan was a royal pain in the arse. Not fun at all. There are still a few small bits...

Replacement PCM/ECU VIN & Mileage updating

Well damn, glad I posted. I actually drove about 30 miles south today to do just what you suggested. I found a 2002 truck, just like mine, but with the 4.7L engine. When I got there the engine was already pulled along with everything else...lucked into finding the PCM sitting on the seat, except...
