About to buy my first pickup

Got lucky already. Local yard had a 97 just brought in, virtually complete. I got the complete ignition module WITH THE KEY IN IT, plus a harness for the rear passenger tail, a cupholder, ash tray, steering wheel trim, and a reman battery for $103 OTD. Half hour later it fires up strong...

Sad day. She was lifted from my driveway overnight and used as the ram vehicle in a coordinated smash and grab. There was a stolen getaway vehicle waiting at the store. The police did say the truck was running when they arrived, small win. The ignition was destroyed and the entire key cylinder...

Welcome aboard! You might recognize me as a follower Washingtonian with the "about to buy my first pickup" thread. I am down in Auburn. Regarding the air movement, I would suggest the simple fixes first. Without insulting your intelligence, have a look at all the fuses. Also the multifunction...

About to buy my first pickup

Got the eBay headers on this afternoon. In a small miracle, zero bolts broke off in the heads. There was one bolt loose and another missing on the drivers side. I did have to chase 5 of the 12 threads. I used the included gasket, along with high heat gasket maker on the header side. I purchased...

Intake put back together with the Repair plate and Doorman kit. Coolant is new. I also cleaned each fuel injector for about $15. YouTube shows how people step up the aerosol can straw to the injector. Connect 12v and spray carb cleaner. I saw crooked streams turn into wide most atomization...

Truck is parked for a while so going under some pretty fair maintenance and repair. The kegger is off with the Ram Plenum Repair plate in the mail. I am slow halfway through porting a junkyard OEM throttle body. Soon after I will replace the upper and lower ball joints.

Got the Redhead box in today and filled the system with fresh fluid. HOLY MOLY did it make a difference. I didn't even put the frame brace back in. The wheel is tight with zero slop. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. A little steep at ~$400 but I am glad I made that change.

My steering wheel still has loads of slop. Redhead Steering is actually 5 mins from my house so I bit the bullet today. I got the old box off in a half hour, I will put the new one in tomorrow. I have also heard a faint tick at cold startup that goes away after a few seconds. At first I...

What did you do to/with your second gen today?

Picked up new tires from the nearby Tire Rack DC. These are for my daily.

My cruise control has never worked. I pulled the old servo to find it was damaged, likely acid from the battery above. $10 junkyard part and presto! My tubing is all good so it should hold up. Took time to wire brush and paint the fender where the was a little surface rust under the battery tray.

Since lifting last year my axle has been over to the driver's side. Today I welded on this angled track bar extension bracket. It has two mounting holes to the passenger side of the factory mount, I chose to plug weld those holes. It moves the factory mounting over an inch and centered the axle...

My cupholder is on the right, clearly missing the support and spring for the bottom of a beverage. Learned the hard way last year when a can went straight to the floor. The junkyard piece on the left is complete but grungy. I combined them to create a functional cupholder. Lubed the runners a...

$200 for a set of 5 Pro Comp Alloy Series 69 and 285/75/16 Pirelli Scorpion MT. More tread than I had. They came from a JK so I added 1.5" wheel adapters. Torqued and threadlock applied. Cleaned the hubs a little first also, and greased the ball joints while I was staring at them.

Junkyard find! Dodge stamped drop in bedliner and the tailgate piece. The tailgate had a Mopar sticker on the back. $50 and some cleaning.

The OEM muffler was beginning to rust through so I replaced with knockoff Flowmaster style. It is a bit shorter so I needed about a foot of tube at the exit. Sounds throaty. Used a couple $10 rolls of budget tint film and got the rear window and front windows. It is not perfect, although I...

Truck has sat a while but I gave her some love this week, specifically the front bumper. The trim sagged off the side so I found replacement clips at the junkyard (free!) And epoxy glued them to the spots with missing clips on the back of the trims. Painted both pieces, along with the factory...

Mine has factory power mirrors. While nice for the age, they don't see that well. Today I bolted on flip-up tow mirrors. Hopefully I can see my lake boat while backing up the trailer now.

Not much to report other than some light maintenance. I have had a few parts laying around and finally got to them today. The vacuum actuator up front had a slow drip. Replaced the cork gasket, also disassembled and cleaned the unit itself. It is all good, including the o-ring and retaining...

3 wks ago I pulled a fender for $40. I got a pint of the PRC code paint and an aerosol clear coat. Sanded up to 1000 and sprayed about 4 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. Removal of the wrinkled and replacement took 81 mins.

Been a few weeks. I pulled the linkage and tried two seal tools to get out the shift shaft seal. Frustrated it sat and dripped for a week until I tried a traditional seal puller and it popped. New one tapped in beautifully. It was previously overfilled so I added a little over a quart and it's...

I had the seal fixed. At one point it was almost pouring out. It is still leaking from driver's side above the pan. I cleaned the area really well and it appears to be the shift shaft seal. $3 part and can be fixed where it sits. Trouble is the tool is hard to come by. Does anyone happen to...

It's dripping trans fluid pretty bad. Located this hole towards the front of the T-case. is this a weep hole showing a failed trans output seal? Or is that a chip in the housing? Doesn't look manufactured to me.

Oil back back on. I replaced the oil pump at the same time. The old seal didn't look bad, but it wasn't clocked 3/8" in the seat as the manual says to be. I followed the instructions step by step and torqued everything properly. Here is the picture of the inspection cover, you can clearly see it...

Ok question for those more intelligent than myself: manual says torque the crankshaft main bearing caps to 20 and then 85. It also says "crankshaft rear main oil seal retainer bolts" torqued only to 16 foot lbs. I'm confused by what those are? I was under the impression the main bearing cap is...

Been a little bit but I've chipped away some more. I have 2 very young children so time is difficult to set aside. Put on a 2" kit with shocks from Rough Country, also changed the diff fluid. There was a little sludge in the bottom of the diff, a dark gray almost black thin paste. I didn't see...
