35W kit from Diode Dynamics with 5000k bulbs works great for me. I think all kits require you to cut the housing, but it really is no big deal. More time consuming is finding a good mounting spot for the ballasts, igniters, anti-flicker modules,...
Good call on skipping HIDs for high beams. Mine are not very bright when cold, so flashing high beams wouldn’t work so well.
The low beams also have a shutter that opens up when switching to high beam, giving the full brightness of the HIDs.
Installed Diode Dynamics HID kit on my 2017 Rebel. Didn’t drive at night yet so can’t comment on brightness. At least I can tell that the 5k bulbs match almost perfectly with the oem LED fogs.
It’s a matter of efficiency. Diesel engines just don’t produce much heat, especially when idling and at low rpms. A gasser is less efficient, so more of the fuel consumed is lost as heat.
Installed 1/2 an HID kit but had to pull it out when one of the bulbs in the kit was DOA. The 5k bulb matches well with the stock LED fog light on the Rebel
