    Shock recommendations?

The best way to soften the ride is to add a rear sway bar like the Bigwig from Hellwig. Shocks are actually spring dampeners and minimize the movement of the springs when a wheel hits a bump in the road. The Brits call them dampeners which is much more accurate. Unless the shocks are shot there...

    3500's ride

With the bed empty a heavy duty rear sway bar like the Hellwig Bigwig helps a great deal. Any impact to one wheel is shared by the opposite wheel. DRW is the cheapest way for the factory to add more payload capacity. The alternative is 19.5 wheels and tires. But with SRW one can buy tires with...

    look at this brush guard

For brush it is overkill and these guys never take their trucks off the pavement or they might get dirty. For deer the brush guard is somewhat protective of the radiator but the deer will get tossed up and go through the windshield. Plenty of pictures on the Web showing this having happened. In...

Transmission fluid and rear differential fluid change

With my heavy duty diesel 2500 pickup with its Allison transmission there was a recommended change interval based on miles and years. But with every gas light truck or SUV or sedan there is generally no recommended mileage for changing the transmission fluid and the manuals advise only to change...

For the guys who think they get more power with 91 octane fuel

The btu's available from 91 octane gasoline is not higher than for 87 octane gas. The engine computer that controls spark advance will retard it to prevent pre-ignition or "knock". If an engine is carboned up in the cylinders then a higher octane gas may help but this is a very rare situation...

    8-speed vs 6-speed gas mileage

If Ram improves its fleet CAFE by 0.5 mpg it is not trivial although it will be for the person who buys the truck. What you get with the 8-speed are two additional overdrive gears which help only when on level ground and no load in the bed or attached to the hitch.

Why the decrease in HD tire pressures?

The Firestsone tires are good ones but I replaced them on my truck to get greater payload capacity. The Transforce were rated for 2700 lbs and I replaced them with Nitto tires that had a 3750 lb at 80 PSI. Best to go with the Ram recommendation for tire pressure but it is odd that the PSI for...

    BE44-44 transfer case oil

AC Delco transfer case fluid sells for $10.32 a quart. Not surprising that your dealer is trying to screw you. The MOPAR fluid sells for $22.80 a quart. https://geogreenfuels.com/product/genuine-mopar-transfer-case-lube-68089195aa-bw44-44-transfer-case-fluid/ Dealers make most of their profits...

RBP Stealth Power Running Boards Availability

My full size pickups have all had running boards that provided an easier step up into the cab and they protected the sides of the truck from mud and gravel and rocks tossed up by the tires. Retractable running boards cost more to do only half as much. I cannot see the logic in this.

How much weight transfer off of the front axle is OK?

According to your numbers the trailer is exerting a hitch load of 700 lbs and that should be a concern. With a light trailer like your a WDH is not needed for a pickup truck. If a pickup sags with a trailer attached then it needs more load support at the rear axle. Your options for doing so...

Like riding on eggs after return from 5500 mile trip towing 5er

A failing tire, usually the beads shifting, can still be balanced at a tire shop. One or more of your tires likely needs to be replaced.

    1/2 Ton Tow

Your truck also needs a trailer brake controller and you need to know how to set it properly. For me I have no option but to go on a freeway to get anywhere and need enough power to safely merge with traffic. There are plenty of professional services for towing a trailer to a new location...

    Farewell Ram and hello Tundra

I have owned 5 Toyota mini trucks with 4WD and they held up exceptionally well. When sold them after 180,000 miles on and off road they were rock solid with no gearbox whine or steering wheel play and all the electical systems worked perfectly. I waited for the 2022 Tundra to arrive but then was...

    towing 5th wheel with 1500

Be prepared to have much longer times to get up to freeway speeds to merge with traffic and forget about passing slow moving tractor trailer rigs on steep grades. To me a convential trailer that is attached to the hitch is a smarter way to travel. With a cap over the bed of the truck I can put...

Terrible, Horrible luck TT wise. My fault though...anything I can do?

I have read a great many posts such as this over the years. People chose the tow vehicle and then learn that it is not adequate for the camper they later want to buy. It would save them a lot of grief to spend a few hours doing research but they are too lazy to do so. With the internet this is...

How to increase my gas mileage with the 5.7L Hemi?

It takes 4x as much power from the engine to push through the air at 70 mph as at 35 mph. The drag coeffient of a pickup is about the same as for a brick. Minimize short trips and avoid unnecessary stops by adjusting your speed and use moderate acceleration when starting up. Semi drivers...

Best 1/2 ton configuration for towing

7,000 lbs is not a lot of weight and no problem with a modern 1/2 ton truck. As others have mentioned get lower gears, even the 3.55 would be OK. The 3.92 will help with acceleration getting onto the highways and merging with traffic. The V-8 hemi without the eTorque would be my choice consider...

Just need a little brake advice.

In the past with vehicles I have replaced the rotors and pads with the best aftermarket ones I could buy and never had to do this a second time. Manufacturers tend to go cheap with the rotors on their SUVs and light duty trucks and no reason to have a rotor problem at your mileage unless you...

Will I regret not getting the V8 even if I don’t tow? Debating which truck to get…

Check the warranty period and cost to replace the eTorque unit before you decide. I would want an engine without this feature.

    Another engine hours question

My last truck averaged 40 mph so easy to divide the odometer mileage by 40 to have the engine hours. I only use engine hours to decide on motor oil changes and use fuel consumption to decide when to change the fuel filter. So if you put in a hours value it is not all that important going forward.

    Dead mouse

I had a mouse that had built a nest inside the engine bay but found it very difficult to remove the odor in the cab. What finally worked was using a spray bottle of Febreze. I sprayed the entire dash and floor and doors of the truck and it completely fixed the odor problem. Zero odor even after...

5th Wheel or Bumper Pull Toyhauler?

The 5th wheel will be easier to maneuver into a space at a campground. The downsides include having the interior space at two levels and usually more steps up to the main salon area. Check the floor plans and while you are doing this verify the sleeping setup. Often an RV will be advertised as...

    EcoDiesel Discontinued.

An eco diesel is really an oxymoron. Diesel are not economical in terms of total cost of ownership and the engines with their emissions controls are not as reliable as a gas engine. I was looking at new and used pickups earlier in the year and the new one were selling for $5,000 over MSRP. But...

Misfiring and can’t seem to find the problem on 4.7

With a misfire on a modern engine with electronic ignition the very first thing I would have done is check all the plug and coil wires with an Ohm meter.

Royal Purple 20-820 no longer made?

I care primarily about the fit and with my GM 2500 the OEM fit much better than the Fram air filter. Not much difference in the filter media used and it is hardly rocket science to design them. I avoid Amsoil products, especially their markedly inferior diesel motor oil (even Wal-Mart's has a...
