I have a 04 Ram 1500 with the 5.7. It's coming up on 150000 miles. So I'm considering replacing the motor when the time comes and was wondering if there are suggestions anyone would offer for when I do the engine replacement. Crate cost vs Re-build? It already has a tru-dual exhaust system, Variram intake, but everything else is stock (did have to rebuild the rear axle). I am not interested in a race truck, but I plan to upgrade the cam for power yet still need general highway drive ability.

Define "when the time comes", is that upon failure or an arbitrary mileage number? I'm asking because properly maintained, these engines go well past 200K and even 300K. The pre-eagle (03-08) 5.7's are now more expensive to get a quality crate rebuild than the 09 and newer. If you have a good, experienced engine shop semi-near you may make out better on a stock rebuild. Since you wanna throw a cam in you will need 6.1 pushrods (intake and exhaust) and 6.1 exhaust springs (for all 16 springs) for the heads anyway (after they're freshened up, valve job, new seals, etc) since every aftermarket cam for the pre-VVT hemi (03-08 5.7, 05-10 6.1) is based on a 6.1 base circle.

Thank you for your input. Upon failure. Fortunately I have a machine shop two miles from the house. The truck is pampered to say the least but it does get to pull the boat or trailer with atvs to the lake in the summer.

Hell son, upon failure that may be quite a while lol.....theres a mid to low 12sec 2005 QC that made it to 256,000 miles or so before it needed the engine torn down (stroker rebuild) and it was a high to mid 12sec then.

That's an idea. Might as well if it's tore down...

A stroker will cost around $6,000 for all the necessary parts. Then if you aren’t too careful you’ll start eating transmissions.

Yeah... chatted with my machine shop friend your right. Spendy!! He suggested when the time comes and for what I want a overhaul will do and depending on cam grind will determine if re-program is necessary.

Was just reading this thread and thought I would chime in..
I have a 2008 Ram 2500, 4x4, 5.7L Hemi, currently 243K on it, and still running strong.
It is still all stock, I picked it up this past summer. I plan on picking up a swap'er to rebuild in the near future. They will definitely go a long way if taken care of.

And that's why you still have your transmission lol
