I rrcenrec purchased a 2018 Ram 2500 crew cab short bed. Cummins, Auto 4x4. Tradesman trim.

Where is Ram coming up with 17000+ lbs of towing capacity?

Payload of 2450?

I got this truck because I'm setting up a metalworking shop and developing a piece of property for myself. If I wanted to hook up to a gooseneck trailer and go get a 12,000 lb lathe I thought this truck could do it.

If your pin weight if a gooseneck trailer is supposed to be 25% of the total trailer weight. So if the trailer weight is 17000 lbs total that should give you a pin weight of 4250.

I bought this truck because it's advertised as 17,250 .

How do you put that much trailer behind a truck only rated for 2450 lbs of cargo weight?

Somebody here will explain the trailer math far better than me but, you're well within the axle weight ratings.

A bumper pull is only 10-15% tongue.

What the others said. Yes you can do it with airbags, but you will be overweight. You may be within grawr, but I still think your pushing your limits too far.

Honestly with a 17klb rig your in one ton srw or maybe even drw territory. Just my opinion.

Yep, bumper pull you are good for the 17K towing. For the pin weight you are looking at you are even at the outside edge of a SRW 3500 depending on how it's optioned. Probably should be in a 3500 dually for what you are looking to do to be honest.

So If you knew what your needs are going to be, why purchase a new truck that doesn't have the numbers to support what you are wanting to do?

Those stickers are on the door jam for a reason, Quick reference.

I figure you'll be fine in terms of hardware, just not in terms of numbers.

Well I knew the GVWR is 10,000 lbs so I figured I'd be fine. Then the Ram site towing guide listed 17,000 + lbs towing for the tradesman truck I got.

Is there a way to get a bumper pull to take your equipment home with?

Sure. I haven't bought a trailer yet.

I do have a strong preference for a deckover.

Carrying (payload) and pulling (engine and drive train) are two different things and manufacturers love to blur the line and advertise the best case of both.

How often are you pulling this equipment? Every day, once a week, month or just once?
