I have a new 2012 R/T. The book says the first oil change is required at 8000 miles. In general, I will change the oil at 5000 miles intervals but I was wondering if the first oil change should be done sooner, like 1000 miles? Is the oil in the engine a "break in oil" that needs to be changed sooner or is just vanilla 5W20?

Oil filter question, I usually use the K&N high performance filters with the 1" nut on the end to make them easy to get on and off. Is it OK to use this filter or is there something special about an OEM Mopar filter?

This comes from the service department at my dealer, so not sure how correct they are. But I asked the same question. If I had built the motor, I would have changed the oil after the first few hours. But he said that it wasn't necessary, and recommended it at 5000kms. He said they come with synthetic from the factory which once again wouldn't be recommended on motors even 10 years ago for break in.

Most of this fly's in the face of what I know, but then, all my experience with motors are old tech. Personally, I will change it at about 1000kms just to be safe, you definitely aren't going to hurt it by changing it sooner.

supposedly the truck is suppose to let you know when a change is due based on your driving habits. told me to change mine right around 3200 miles but ill stick with 5000 mile intervals now that the first is outta the way. i went with a synthetic and a mopar filter .

I am pretty sure it is not a smart system like GM's. It simply goes off way to early to be based on driving etc. I have to reset it 2 or 3 times to get to my next oil change. The book says 8500 so why have the thing go off at 2 or 3 makes no sense to me. Wish I could disable it for good.

i did mine at 5,000 at the dealer. Not sure what oil they put in so i might do the next one at 3,000 in case it is not full synthetic oil

I don't know about the hemis but the 4.7 uses regular oil. That's what a buddy that works for dodge told me. He said he wouldn't wait till 8000 miles 4000 the max. He's not making a dime off me so I don't see him saying something just for the money. About the light i changed mine at 3k my light didn't go off till 3500 and I drive the wheels off
