Never had a vehicle with a battery that died that fast. Is this normal?

Short answer is it happens. Usually they are warrantied and/or prorated though.

It's not something that happens normally on these vehicles, there has been a battery thread or two and a general consensus of replacement age is around 5-6 years old.
More likely you just got a bad battery.

I had one fail just under 2 years. So yes it will happen. More than likely a bad cell.
