2002 dodge ram 5.9 no start common problems

Hey guys just got back with my buddies new truck a 2002 dodge ram 5.9 magnum previous owner said it was a fuel pump, haven't hooked up the pressure gauge but i can hear the pump going, i sprayed starter fluid down the throttle body jut to kick it over, nothing at all. It does crank strong , so my main question is what are common problem for this to happen,
Payed 800 for the truck lol

That's odd that starting fluid won't do much. The IAC motor on the back of the throttle body is a prime candidate for problems but usually only at idle as the name suggests. Since you can hear the fuel pump running, check the next thing needed for ignition, fire. I'd pull a wire to make sure its getting fire. If not there then pull the one wire off the ignition coil and try to start. If it sparks there, then ur coils bad. That's just quick check for the coil. If not then maybe a wiring issue or PCM.
What's the mileage by the way? It may help somewhat with diag. Maybe someone else can chime in and help further. Good luck man.

Just because the fuel pump is running doesn't mean it is pumping and just because it is capable of pumping doesn't mean it is getting fluid to pump. The starter fluid should have excited it slightly at least, but the only way to tell if it is getting fuel is to put a gauge on the rail. They have a fitting on the opposite side of the supply hose side to put a gauge on. If you have pressure then it is probably spark. Have to start there.

Thanks for the help guys, brought my test tools over in the morning, had no spark.
Starting looking around.. found a bad relay for the ecm , she fired right up and runs strong no strange engine noises... cost to fix 0.00 kinda a good day.. thanks for the helpful pointers guys!
