Just picked up an 07 5.9 mega that had a tuner, not sure which program was loaded. Anywho, the GPM thing showed at 16.4GPM with the program in, once I set it back to OEM programming I am up to 18.5GPM (I reset the reading).

I am reading that I should be in the 24-28 GPM range. Other than the basic things like tire pressure and such, what else should I be looking for to make up what I may be losing?

Thanks much for the help.

I think you are just a off on your expectations about what the fuel mileage of this particular truck is supposed to be. 24-28mpg is extremely high for a bone stock truck. You have to understand how the overhead trip computer calculates fuel economy and distance to empty. To receive the most accurate fuel economy you should press the reset button while at a steady cruise. Once you have driven for any long period of time the overhead can be a pretty unreliable number.

I have owned several 5.9/6.7 Cummins powered trucks over the years. I also spent almost 20 years in the dealership turning wrenches on these trucks. In stock form the quad cab trucks would get a best of about 21.5mpg. The mega cab trucks would see a best of about 19.5-20.5mpg. I do all of my fuel economy calculations by the way of own and paper.

With my 5.9 Cummins powered trucks the best I have ever done was 841 miles on 34 gallons to give me a total of 24.73mpg all while driving 58mph on a long, nonstop drive. I was only able to get this fuel economy once. With my average driving I would normally stay right in the 21.5mpg range over the entire 34 gallons.

I know how truck owners think. I am one. We all like to say how good our fuel economy is based on what we see on the overhead but it's just not that accurate. On my best tank of fuel at 24.73mpg my overhead trip computer showed I was averaging 26.6mpg.

Much appreciated! Figured I would get 18-19 HWY when I picked her up, so not like I was really expecting 28HWY with 191k on it. Suppose I could have mentioned that Im not looking for high numbers, more like where can I look besides the basics.

I don't know much about trucks honestly, I had an 04 Dakota for the last 16yrs, so this is literally my second truck. Couldn't get rid of that Dakota, it was too reliable until it was totaled (RIP Dakota). Its funny because I am a mechanic, but I work on heavy machinery at a power plant, completely different animal.

Yeah man. No worries. I was hoping I could provide you with some real world data from my own personal vehicles and what I have worked on over the years.
