I think your buddy is mistaken. The fob has an RFID chip in the tip, that's how the truck knows what fob is allowed to start the vehicle, not sure how you can get around that.
You don't even need a battery in the fob for the RFID chip to work. The physical key is to unlock the door and tailgate if the battery dies.

This is just for information
The Heavy Duty Rams are 1 year behind the 1500 models
so a 2011 Ram Heavy Duty is the same as a 2010 Ram 1500, function & parts wise
..............

As far as FOBs go, there are 2 basic shapes beginning with 2013

The Fob for your Ram will have a shape similar to this, unless someone modified it.

Sorry for the oversize images
The one with the x2 on it, will start up when you are maybe 30 feet away from your Ram, just press the x2 button twice & it should start
( some Rams windows will open, if you press the X2 button twice & continue to hold the x2 button down )

the type below will only lock & unlock the Ram from outside

The PANIC part of the FOB must be inserted into the ignition to anything else, like to move it

Beginning in 2013, the RAM 1500 began using this type
You never stick it into the ignition, you can just leave it in your pocket & push the ignition with your finger

This key was an option, not all have it.

But the key you find inside your FOB is just to unlock the door in case the battery is dead in the truck or FOB.

That type of key, is called a Transponder Key

The inner part of the Transponder Key has a Circuit Board in the grip part,
it can be programmed just like a FOB & they are less costly then the other kind of FOB.

Transponder Keys are often used by people who go hiking or swimming,
Thin & compact

Chipped, or Transponder, keys are keys that have an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip inside the head of the key. These types of keys have become an industry standard for vehicle manufacturers. This is because the RFID chip adds an extra layer of security to your vehicle's ignition
