2011 Ram 1500 5.7 210k miles on it about a year ago I changed my ignition switch to fix the service 4x4 message and now lately when I am driving it will come on. However now it will lock the shifter so I cant get it out of park when service 4x4 comes on normally a restart will fix it and 4x4 will work. But a few times now I have gotten stuck messing with it in the parking lot. Does anyone know a work around so it doesn't lock me in park??? I dont know why 4x4 error should prevent me from driving it... sounds like a safety issue if I had a emergency and cant get the the dam thing outa park lol.

How old is your battery? Did you check fluid level in diffs? just pop the top ***** and check it. Did the ignition switch fix it? maybe the underlying condition still exists, maybe TIPM or Short, just thinking out loud.

Battery is 2 months old I will check fluid in dif for the hell of it. The ignition switch fixed it for about a year last time however when the message would appear it would not lock me in park this time it is? as for the timp idk its just weird restart it everything is fine 4x4 works and I can get outa park most the time. Maybe next time it does it I will tap on the timp to see if it goes away. I was also thinking maybe the 4x4 switch? just don't want to start throwing parts at it for nothing also my scanner comes up with no codes.

Did this start right after battery change, or before? If right after did you change the battery or a shop?

TIPM's are a drag because when the connection is lost there is no sensor throwing a code. That is kinda how they fail, intermittent type stuff with no code, as in no code from TIPM. I'd set up a bypass just in case you needed it in a pinch, as in bypass the ignition switch by using the cig lighter relay, plenty of youtubes on that, look up bypass TIPM. Bypass the ignition see if your park still is locked. At least you wont be stuck at an inconvenient time or something.

So you see where I am going? The usual suspect would be transfer case motor, but since the 4x4 works, it is likely electrical. Something perhaps listed above, you might just need a flash, or you lost memory after the battery, ground, TIPM, sensor at the wheel, something stupid that frustrates anyone who has this happen. If it happened right after the battery, likely the fault is related to the loss of power when you unplugged it?

Finally got my scanner back from being fixed was able to pull a code 'c1480 Transfer case range digital position sensor performance'
Anyone know what this means? Is the sensor in or on the transferase? I am not able to get under the truck currently had surgery recently.

I currently am having issues with my 2011 Ram 1500 the Service 4x4 light is on as well as the Traction Control light. Still goes in and out of 4 wheel drive but once the lights come on I cannot move the truck out of park. I got told by the dealer that it was the Transfer case position sensor so I changed the motor for the transfer case and still having issues, any idea on what it may be?

I ended up picking up a new brake switch from Oreillys and also topped off my transfer case fluid and have not had any issues since. Im hoping it does not come back on

On my 11, 4x4, it's usually moisture from being driven in snow.

I had the transfer case switch replaced once at about 80K, but since then, if it comes on, a quick park in my heated garage will solve the problem.

The switch generally is the culprit, moisture usually causes it to act up
