Intermittently my check engine light comes on and the eco indicator no longer comes on; when this happens starting the truck turns into a PITA to the point that I wonder if it is going to start at all but by the 2nd startup it is gone....until next time. It is not a solid problem which is why my mechanic hasn't been able to diagnose/fix he thinks it's the ECO system locking a cylinder(s) open or closed. Anyone have this issue and a fix for it?

You need to go to a Autozone, O'Riellys, Advanced Auto Parts & ask them if they will hook up a code reader.

That will usually indicate a few possible things that need to be looked at

Have you checked to see what trouble codes show up and if so what are they?
It stayed on long enough through a restart for me to get it checked out.

Multiple Cylinder misfires and Crankshaft position sensor.

It could be the fuel pump getting weak. When mine went bad it threw misfires codes and a throttle position code weird stuff sometimes. You would need to monitor fuel pressure to know.
