2011 rear diff oil change

I have a 2011 ram 1500 that was a late build not included in the rear diff cover recall so I don’t have the plastic plug for a fill hole in my cover. I have the fill and drain plugs in the housing behind the diff cover. Can I just drain and fill until it starts running out the fill hole like on ever other diff or do I somehow need to add more fluid so it sits above of the fill hole? If so how would I do that?
