I just bought a 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L which has around 135k miles. While driving or idling at low speeds the car will shudder and when coming to a stop it'll sort of like lurch to a stop and jitter. Then once it reaches a full stop it'll continue to shake very hard. The spark plugs have already been replaced but when I put a OBD scanner in it was showing a cylinder 5 misfire. Does anyone know a way to diagnose the problem and fix it as cheap as possible?

Well, 90% of the time especially with mis fire and no other codes plus shudder, cam lob on 5 is toast, and likely will not be a cheap fix. Having said that, you can make an argument that a 2012 is one of the best years for 1500 rams, especially if it has 3.92 gears? Well worth getting it fixed, hopefully you got a good deal. Less likely culprit injectors on 5 or coil pack on 5.

So you would say its worth investing the money in the fix or do I just loose the $500 deposit I put on the truck? It has 135k miles but everything else on it is solid

Try swapping the coils with another cylinder, see if the misfire moves with the coil. While you have it apart, look for corrosion on the springs inside the spark plug boots.

If all you would lose is 500, yeah take the loss, but of course rule out other possibilities first. 90% chance means you have 10% it is something else. I don't know the particulars with your deal of course, but if you have an out take it.. Find another 2012 ram. 99% whoever sold it to you knew the issue and hid it. These cams generally don't fail fast.

You owe it to yourself to verify, just say'n.

Here is the dyi cam thread.

Since the last 4 years did happen, I haven't seen any cam job under 5k lately, I'd say range 6500 to 10k and 12-13 k at dealer. It might be a good idea to price crate engine at an independent.

If you can diy, I think you can get in out near 2k.

What do I do if a dealership sold me a bad used car in Texas?

The consumer files a Lemon Law complaint with the $35 filing fee with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and provides notice of the complaint with a last opportunity to repair defect to the applicable manufacturer. For the fastest processing of your complaint, go to the Motor Vehicle Dealer Online Complaint System.

You might want to start looking into your rights. It appears lemon law would apply if under original warranty.

btw, did you get any type of warranty at all like typical in CA ro get a 30 day warranty on used cars bought at dealer.

  • Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA): If the dealer misrepresented the car's condition, you may have legal grounds to return the car under the DTPA.
