I am looking at upgrading to heavy duty to tow my 7,000 camper. I have a 19 ram 1500 now. I have a 22 F-250 XLT 7.3 4.30 on order. A used 2013 Ram 2500 Laramie 6.7 with 70,000 popped up for sale. I normally like to do a lot research before buying but time isn’t permitting. The Ford has a higher payload and all the features I need, warranty, no emissions worries. I’m not made of money and I’m worried about potential costs of emission and maintenance issues with a 13 diesel with 70k. Can anyone fill me in on any issues the 13’s have had? And what to look out for? I also made a poll for the choice…

Most newly designed engines have a few years of working the bugs out of them in the real world so it is an unknown. I know the 6.4L in the Ram HD had issues the first few years it came out. So did the 6.7L Cummins. A friend of mine has the 7.3L and unloaded it does great, however, he does say that it doesn't even come close to being as good as the 6.7L Powerstroke diesel that the 7.3L replaced when towing. Although his trailer is 12k so your 7k trailer may be a different story. For that light of a load, I would probably go with the 7.3L unless you think you may be going to a bigger trailer over 10k in the future.

If my memory serves me correctly, the 2500 trucks did not get the updated 3-link front end until 2014, but did get the most updated engine, emissions, and transmission at the time. Prior to the 3-link it's my understanding that there were problems with ball joints failing especially in the heavy cummins front end. I believe it was practice to replace oem with greasable joints to remedy problems. Might want to have that front end inspected prior to purchase. My $0.02

I guess it comes down to how much are they asking for the Cummins. I know used truck prices are crazy right now

$53,000, the new F-250 7.3 is the same price. I have a 19’ Ram 1500 I’d sell. It’s value is inflated right now as well, so I look at as a wash. Seems buying new from right dealer without the 5-10k “market adjustment” mostly requires you order and wait. Anything on any lot around me has that mark up.

If it's the same price, new 2022 Ford F250 all the way. I do love my RAM, but Ford builds a darn good truck also.

The 7.3 is a beast, 4.30. gearing, brand new, not buying someone else's potential problem child for over 50k. 9 yrs newer, new hoses, belts, suspension components, 3/36 full, 5/60 powertrain warranties, I could go on.

Just my .02

I like the ram, I have a 19’ 1500 Laramie. Absolutely love the truck! The ford has a few things that pull me towards it (for my price range);
-Axle locker (vs anti spin)
-Simple old school engine (7.3)
-Telescoping wheel
-Uses 87 octane
Ram pluses;
-leather wheel
-Coil suspension
-Longer tested powertrain (6.4)
-Alpine stereo
-110v outlet in box

For my use the axle locker is really the main selling point. The anti slip is tuned too tame. I’m in no way rock crawling but I do a lot of dirt/gravel/desert/mud/forest road driving and a locker is a complete game changer. The 87 octane and simple pushrod cam in block 7.3 engine is simple and something I can work on if needed. The 7.3 TQ comes on very low in RPM which will help keep truck from revving high. I almost pulled the trigger on a Ram 2500, the price was right but got beat to the signing. It was flinging to be 2,000 cheaper than the ford. Figured I could throw a locker in for that price…
