This is my first dodge, and at 15000 miles it signaled for an oil change and fuel filter change. The dealer said that I should only use conventional oil not synthetic and Change it every 5000 miles. It's a daily driver without any heavy towing. What do you guys think about the oil and why did the computer not ask for an oil change until 15000 miles? Also is it normal to change both fuel filters that quickly?

I had a Ram Cummins and drove a Cummins for a decade, and you need diesel oil. Chevron Delvac or Rotella are the two most popular, this is my favorite, many benefits of esters, look it up. I am sure Amsoil has a bypass filter for u, with a bypass filter you can easily go 30k on an oil change with your engine. You may want to run a UOA from blackstome half way through, but diesels do not need clean oil like gas engines do. Even if you are playing it safe, a 15k miles oil change is nothing with a diesel, all assuming you have proper filtration. Amsoil AE filters are synthetic, and will filter that oil for 30k easily. Some guys go 50k with a bypass, some go 100k and some go over that. Google it, 100k oil change interval, or 300k oil change interval. It is diesel specific, best you can get on gas is 25k. It is the most important upgrade for any diesel in my opinion, get a bypass filter. You should really join the TDR website and learn more, that is the Cummins specific website and those guys know what they are doing. Owning a Cummins is like joining a killer freak club, go be a freak over there, good stuff.

Sounds kinda soon for fuel filters, but that is also the rub with diesel. It is a dirty fuel and often will mess up filters, and really no way around that. Always get your fuel and a reputable place like Chevron. I haven't owned for a long time, but back in the day it really mattered where u get the fuel. Do you have a water separator, dunna with the 14's? I remember they had some options with filtration over on tdr, I just forget them it has been so long. The Ram forum is no slouch, killer info here too, so tap both sites for good info. But register at the Turbo Diesel Registry, TDR.

A family member owns a landscape business, all of his 6 vehicles are Cummins, and he has been on a 30k oil change interval with a bypass filter since day one. Only his heavy equipment trucks that carry the heavy tow loads get a 15k oil change interval. He has been in business for 30 years give or take, never had any issue with the engines other then fuel pumps none related. Some issues with the tranny's, because he tows heavy stuff and they eat tranny's, but those engines are damn near bullet proof.

You do have to change one of the filters sooner, like every 5k, but the other bypass filter will go the 30k no problem. I forget the actual numbers on the filters, like I said it has been over 15 years for me, but they know this stuff over on TDR.

Service your vehicle as the manual states NOT what the stealership states. 15,000 is WAY TOO MANY MILES for the first oil change IMO. I personally change at 1/2 of the recommended extreme duty miles for the first change & then regular duty after that. Again, I personally want the piece of mind that I am doing what I can to get all of the break-in metal out of the system. Some may say this is overkill & that's ok. To each their own.

Woops! I didn't notice until reading Burla's Post that you have a diesel. Some other guys on here will have a better opinion on here as I have little service experience with those. I think they are built much more loose than gas so I would imagine there would be less metal floating around. I do stick with my opinion of service as your manual states.

Even though 15K miles is the Cummins recommendation, Chrysler requires an oil change every 15,000 miles, six months, 500 hours, or when prompted by the oil life system, which ever comes first. I would also keep all receipts so if anything did happen, and your warranty was challenged, you have proof of changes and oil/filter type.

Here is what the owners' manual says about the type of oil;
"In ambient temperatures above 0°F (-18°C), we recommend you use 15W-40 engine oil such as Shell Rotella and Shell Rimula that meets Chrysler Materials Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 engine oil category is required. Products meeting Cummins CES 20081 may also be used. "

The battle over synthetic oils is never ending but if you understand what synthetic brings to the table ignoring the internet rumors, I would only go with synthetic if I was constantly operating under zero degrees.

This is true. Unless you are operating in extreme 0°F (or below) or your truck's oil temp is at 250°F all the time then synthetic is not that beneficial.

Also to add to the topic, for larger ISX Cummins engines 15k is the sever duty cycle, 25k is for normal duty cycle, and 35k is recommended for light duty cycle so don't think that 15k interval is too long. You have a lot of oil in that pan which has the ability to hold a lot of contaminants before needing to be changed.

If you want to know what Cummins recommends for the ISB 6.7L that got in medium duty trucks, then here you go.

ISB for medium duty trucks
