They said it 's the sensor/sending unit. They need me to run some gas out and then they have to drop the fuel tank. It's $439 and not covered.

Well the damn truck stranded me tonight 3 miles from my house... It just stalled and started dumping fuel on the ground. This is the second time it's going back after they supposedly fixed it. The first time, the fuel light came on again and they had to calibrate it. My wife and I wound up walking home 3 miles pushing the bicycle that was in the bed because we didn't want it stolen and it had reflectors on it. After spending 25 minutes to explain my location to the Chrysler roadside assistance rep their tow service finally showed up 2 1/2 hours after I got home. Then he couldn't get the truck in neutral when it wasn't running. I had to search Youtube for the ridiculous procedure and text it to him or he was going to drag it up on the flatbed. Then when he finally gets it to the dealer, both gates were locked so he had to take the truck to their storage lot 60 miles away.

I've been occasionally getting a low fuel message for a few seconds after startup...

i think thats just part of the startup procedure, my 13 says it, my 14 said it, my dads 16 said it and his current 18 does it too, its just part of the "system check" that our trucks do

So I did a search and came up empty handed. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 with a 5.7 and it has around 44,000 miles on it. Check engine light came on a few days ago so I had it looked at this morning. It was the quickest the dealership could get it in. The engine code was P0463 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input. They informed me that the fuel pump would have to be replaced and it would cost $580!!!! The truck only has 44,000 on it and the fuel pump already has to be replaced? Kinda irritating. Then they tell me that the part is on back order for 1-3 months!!! Anyone else have this issue? Definitely an irritated customer right now.

Have to drop the gas tank to do it. What's your shop labor rate out there. Where I am its close to $100/hour.

Make sure they do a new filter while they're in there--no recycling the old one.

My 2014 1500 is down for the second time in 6 weeks. $800 to fix the fuel sensor first. Then the truck stopped running while pumping gasoline all over the highway. It's been in the shop for 3 weeks and the dealer tells me a new part is being engineered with no ETA on availability. I've been a MOPAR guy all my life. Sadly, I think I'm done.

You're going to dump the entire brand over a fuel pump problem that's primarily affecting one year of ram? not that big of a mopar guy are you?

go to the other brands, you will see they have an equal amount if not more of problems like this

Sadly, I just joined this "club". Purchased new in March 2014 and just turned 35K. Had the gas cap issue about a year ago with the engine light coming on. The engine light re-appeared about 10 days ago and I cleaned the cap, which I was told was the issue on the first instance and the light went out on its own. Light came back two days ago, cleaned the cap again but when I pulled in tonight, I got the "Fuel Sensor Failure" message. JOY..... Convinced this is it, as the remote start will not work. Found the OEM part online for under $300 and will visit my local garage to let him verify the code and see what he will charge for labor. This is the first issue of any sort with this truck.

Heh... I had a Ford F-250 Supercab do that once in 2004, when the fuel line leading to the V8 460 decided to suddenly leak like a sieve... left one hell of a trail across a goodly chunk of Salt Lake City before I realized something was heinously wrong. Kind of surprised that the thing didn't explode and take me with it, truth be told.

In 1991, I had a 1963 Chevy Nova SS blow its fuel line just as I was leaving Las Vegas for an 1800 mile trip home; siphoned half the tank out, and I had to walk six miles to the nearest store of any kind that could sell me a bit of fuel-resistant tubing and a pair of hose clamps.

In 2007, fuel pump died on a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire that I had just barely drove off the lot the month before (bought it for one of my kids.) Cost me $600 for that one, and a small-claims court case to recover that cash ("Oh, that warranty you bought with the car? It don't cover that..." PS: Carr Chevrolet of Beaverton, OR totally blows goats, and if their entire business died in a fire I'd smile for a week.)

I guess what I'm trying to say is... this ain't nothing new, and it ain't a Dodge/Ram/FCA thing, either.

OK my 15 CC had the fuel level sending unit die at 52k. I drove around like that for 6000 miles just hand calculateling my milage. Truck has 68k now with the original pump and new fuel level sending unit going strong.

The fuel level sending unit is just the float telling you how much fuel you have left in the tank. The part is around $130. Unless your fuel pump is dead "you do not need to replace the whole assembly."

I dropped the tank myself. Probably the 5th different mopar vehicle I've dropped.
It takes 2-3 hrs the first time you do it because there will always be that "uh huh" moment when you forgot to disconnect one line and the tank wont budge.

I'd advise to remove the spare tire when you begin. It will give you a lot more room to work with.

Definitely try to get as much gas out of the tank before dropping it, if you don't want to bathe in gasoline.

You'll need a wedge or chisel to get the metal ring loose so that you can remove the fuel pump assembly unit. Be careful not to puncture the tank or else this install just got a lot more expensive.

The fuel level sensor is on the outside of the fuel pump unit and is pretty easy to remove. Once you put the new unit on the pump assembly drop it back into the tank and reinstall.

If you go to fill your tank and it won't fill up you have unfortunately pinched one of the hoses and you won't be able to put gas in till you fix it.

I wish now that I had took pics or video to help you guys more but sadly I didn't.

Good luck!

There is absolutely no way for the truck to just dump gas along the highway unless the installation didn't go correctly. Where exactly is it leaking from?

All you guys having fuel pump/sender issues, have you taken a poll to see what fuel or additives you're running and seeing if there's a possible connection there? I know a year or so ago shell had a problem with too much sulfur that was creating pump problems. I, myself always run top tier gas but sometimes I wander if even though it's supposedly keeping injectors cleaner if it's having a negative effect on the fuel pump or electronics in the tank. I have no idea if this is a possibility, just wandering what if.

This isn't a fueling issue. The sender is merely a float with a couple wires attaching to the fuel pump assembly. Most of the reports seem to be 2014 trucks. Mine is a 2015 but when I work on it all my manufacturer dates are 2014 labeled everywhere

I have a 2015 and got a code P0463 which is the fuel pump sensor. My truck has 54k. I bought it last yr (2017) with 46k miles. The code was pulled and now the light is off. I'm so mad. If only I read this thread before making my purchase! I would have still bought the truck but new. I just replaced the back rotors and pads. Now I need front rotors, pads and 1 hub bearing!! Love my truck but not these problems!!
Can I wait for that code to come back on again to schedule installation of a replacement pump?

I have the same code in my 14 with 63k miles, I bought the truck used with 48k or so, DTC showed up last week, p0463, level sensor stuck up in high.

I called the dealer last week and they want $1200 to fix it, so I just ended up disabling the mil in the tune so I don’t throw the cell anymore, and I’ll deal with the inaccuracy of the sensor for awhile until I decide to get it fixed, I don’t even know the part number for the damn sensor needed, but I’ll call a couple of shops later on to find out how much will they charge me to drop the tank and swap the sensors.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere in this thread, but has anyone found what the root cause of this sensor failure is? I know on some of them, the float arm linkage moves a wiper contact on a printed circuit shaped like an arch. Clearance builds up and the two don't touch. I've seen fixes as simple as bending the contact arm back into place, or some of them get eroded by fuel or contaminates and need to be replace. Problem is, it sounds like OEM parts suck and aftermarket generally sucks even more.
