2014 Transmission temp concerns

With it being 38 degrees out running for about 30 minutes just normal driving 70 miles an hour my transmission temps are up in the hundred 168 degree range does this seem ridiculously high anybody else

Sounds normal to me, I get closer to 200 degrees when towing as well....

Yeah, that's what mine runs as well. I remember some threads about 1500 Hemi tranny temps going around and WOW do those things run cool - like in the low/mid 100s. Are you, by chance, comparing to another truck?

168 is fine, sounds like normal operating temps. It will run hotter in the summer, especially when working hard.

I know with the 68RFE (which is basically a beefed up 66RFE), the normal operating temp at which you check your fluid level is between 170-180F. Unloaded mine stays between 168-170F and has gotten up to around 200F when towing 14k on a hot day.

My chevy 2500 gasser never runs above 140 and I run the dog mess outta it

On all models equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission oil is flows through an externally mounted oil-to-air Transmission Oil Cooler (TOC) where heat is removed from the transmission oil before returning to the transmission. The transmission oil exiting the torque converter flows through the TOC supply line (2), through the cooler and then back to the transmission sump through the TOC return line (3).

The transmission oil cooling system contains a dual function bypass valve (1) between the transmission and the transmission oil cooler. The bypass valve (1) will bypass the transmission cooler when the fluid temperature is below 70°C (158°F) to aid the transmission fluid to reach operating temperature. The thermal bypass begins opening at 70°C (158°F) and begins allowing fluid flow to the transmission cooler, and is fully open when the transmission fluid temperature reaches 81°C (178°F).

The bypass valve also will start to open if the pressure in the transmission cooler circuit exceeds 3.42 bar (50 PSI).

The bypass valve is a serviceable component.

I had a thread not too long ago that I posted the same concern since I came from a 6 speed that never saw above 140 for normal driving to an 8 speed that sees the same temps you see regularly. The outcome is shown above, these trannys are meant to attain a much higher operating temp for efficiency reasons. I was still concerned about the temps even after since I was schooled in my auto tech classes that the higher the trans temp the quicker it will wear the clutches and cause tranny failure. However, the fluid used in the 8 speed is designed specifically for these high temps.

Mine is almost always in the 165-168 range. I have seen 170 once, and that was while towing in stop and go traffic.

That is probably because the temp sensor on the GMs are in a different location. The closer the sensor is to the torque converter(which causes the most heat) the hotter the temp will read and the more it will fluctuate depending on use. If the sensor is after the trans cooler then it will be low and will not fluctuate as much.

It's normal mine runs between 168-172 all the time.
