Who has done it and what were your experiences?

I have a buddy who is picking up a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 3.92 Gear and 8 sp, rated to tow 10,000+. He has a Prowler Camper that has a GVWR of 9000, he toes it with an 04 Ram 1500 right now, he specifically put E rated tires in that truck for towing this camper, now claims the stock P rated tires will be fine on new truck. Just looking for thoughts/first hand experience, I bought a 2500 rated for 14,500 just to tow my trailer because a 1500 wouldn’t cut it.

He has a Prowler Camper that has a GVWR of 9000,

What's the actual weight of the trailer? GVWR is only what it "could" hold.

E rated tires on his last truck were probably a good idea as they are often the weak link in the towing setup. Of course, axle rating and overall capability of the truck are important as well. Depending on what the actual weight of the trailer is he may be able to stay within his tire ratings and whatnot. The people and stuff he puts in his truck, the less likely it is he'll be within all the numbers. Life would definitely be much easier with a 2500 as you undoubtedly know :)

Trailer weight is 7800 right now, he will have 3 kids his wife, him a bunch of **** in the bed, three kayaks and two dogs when he goes camping.

He's going to be over his payload and GVCWR. That's not enough truck for what he needs. In his defense.... if he did with an 04, he mise well keep going though lol.

Oh man don’t I know it. I tried to talk him into a 2500 Gasser, but he wasn’t having it. So tired are least of my worry! LoL

Max trailer is basically unrealistic. He's got a 9k wet trailer, meaning he's already using 900 pounds of that 1520. Let's not forget the kids, wife, and two kayaks , average weight of a small teenager is what, 90 pounds? that's 160 for two kids. Then him ( 200? ) plus his wife (150? ) plus other various camping things? I'd say easily 200-300 pounds. That's at what, 750 extra pounds in people and cargo ( and that's conservative ). that means he's right around 1650. obviously guesstimates here, but you get the jist.

All of these things aside, I go over payload and RAWR and am fine. Just tell him to be careful!

Would you stick with P rated tires or change them? I’d get LT, probably at least D rated buts most likely E

E rated, tuff truck coils and a Hellwig away bar. :)

Everything I did to my 1500, except the sway bar, saving that for my 2500!

Trailing close to 9k or 15k combined he would be better served by an HD. But I suspect its a multipurpose or use truck that spends only a very limited time towing that load. I towed a 9,086 box TT from Oregon to LA area. With proper set up its certainly do-able but definitely less than ideal. I have two sets of factory rims one with the 265/60/20 E loads the other with 275/55/20 XL loads that the 5th gen & new Ford & GM half tons use. In my experience you really need to load the truck to say 7,500 plus more like 8k on the truck axles to see any benefit over the XLs. Mostly they are just more expensive heavier and ride harder. Now compared to the stock 275/60/20 P passenger or SL standard load tires sure an upgrade will provide some safety stability & reliability margin for that kind of weight. But having towed with all three I'll buy more sets of the XLs.

Not to beat a dead horse but the vast majority of stability is in the setup proper steer weight & TW percentage. Even going from SL to E load is only like say a 2 percent difference kind of thing. It only becomes more noticeable with a poor unscaled setup when its windy or a semi passes too close.

Thanks @VernDiesel I was hoping you would comment with your experience of towing in the 1500 realm.

I go E rated, with a 3/4 ton truck attached :)

I have a buddy in almost the exact same scenario. His door sticker payload rating is 1069# :(

He's probably double that with everything in the bed, cab full of people and tongue weight of 30' TT. He did get better tires but that's only part of the problem.

We can only try to help, but if they won’t listen, I won’t be on the road when they are driving.

I had a 1500 pulling a 30 TT about the same weight as his and it definitely wasn't a good towing experience. Finally ended trading it in a gas 2500 and is a world of difference when towing something that big. Is nice to go down the road without the trailer and/or wind controlling you. Plus the mega cab makes it nice for 3 kids and two dogs.
