I am thinking about buy a 2016 Ram 1500 with the Pentastar. During the test drive, the coolant temp got to 220 and the transmission temp got to 208. My 16 ram with the hemi ran around 205 coolant and 195 trans. The truck im looking at has 63000 miles and a two year/150k power train warranty. Should i be concerned?

I have a 2018 1500 with the Pentastar V6. The coolant in mine does get up around 220 on occasion. Typically it’s 220 or lower whether it’s summer or winter, empty or with a payload. My transmission on the other hand has never been above 195. That includes mid summer, hot, humid city traffic. I have the 8 speed, maybe the 6 speed is different. I’ve had it three years. Purchased as a CPO with 16k and now has 52k. Has been a very good vehicle.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Coolant temps seem to go down to 197 and back to 218 after a bit then back down…maybe a thermostat issue. Trans got up to 213 but comes back down to 203. Either way, damn it feels good to be back in a ram

2017 Laramie Crew cab with the Pentastar. I removed the center sections of the Active grill shutter and the Coolant runs steady at 197 degrees 90% of the time. No up and down swings. In stop and go city traffic on a hot day it will rise to about 204 degrees but returns to the 197 area when any appreciable forward movement can be maintained. Engine oil temp is almost always 4 to 7 degrees less than coolant temp. Unless you somehow take the transmission fluid Temp.control unit ( heater ) out of the loop you will need to live with the transmission Temps. If you elect to do nothing in regards to the Trans. Temps IMO frequent fluid changes would be in order. Not necessarily the filter. An after market pan with removable / replaceable drain plug would accommodate that strategy.

My 2017 Ram 1500 w/ pentastar was great. I never saw temps quite that high, but the ambient temps don't usually get too high in the Buffalo NY area.

I'd make sure your radiator is clean/clear and the E-fan runs when needed. As awesome as the pentastar is, there's lots of plastic bits on the cooling system. T-stats and T-stat housings can be an issue and of course the oil filter housing.

I have a 2015 4x4 Penastar as well. Those temps scared the c rap out of my when I fist got it lol.. But they are normal. ANd the 90+ Oil PSI at start up had me worried at first ! But again that is normal. I may pull a few fins out of the Active Air thing
