Hi, I have a 2017 with the 3.92 gear ratio and thinking of upgrading to the 2020 with 3.92. Does anyone have an opinion if I will notice much difference between the two?

Both Hemi's, both tow brake...etc.

Towing a TT that's 5300 dry, with 700 hitch weight. Thanks

Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket I don't think there is much point. I'm pretty sure all the specs between the two trucks are nearly identical. I pay closer attention to HD trucks so maybe I missed something with the 1500s but I'm pretty sure they are super similar.

I've drove both and rode in both and honestly my 2017 with 5.7 and 3.92s seemed more powerful than the new model. The towing capacity is actually supposed to be a little higher in the 5th gen so i doubt you'll notice much difference there.

I had a “17”. My son has it now. I have a “19” now. Both 1500, 4x2, 5.7 Hemi, Crew Cab. Negligible difference in towing capacity. Biggest difference is rear leaf springs on the “17” vs coil springs on the “19”. I haven’t towed anything with the “19” yet so I can’t give you a comparison between the two when under a tow load.

Your 2017 1500 had rear leaf springs?

My son has a '17 ram 1500 and his has coil springs like my 2019. the '17 has 6900# vs 7100# gvw on my '19 and a few differences inside such as mine has a flat floor in the back seat area and the reclining seats and the sub is mounted behind the seat instead of taking up a lot of the storage space under the seats.

Unless that '17 is a 3500 or somehow an '08 chassis (last year for the 1500 leaf suspension) ended up under the '17 it has coil springs.

Well now your making me question myself. I may be thinking of the “03” I had. Does the COVID thing affect your memory or is it just my age? Hate to think my wife has been right about that all this time.

The 2020 has about 1700 to 1800 payload capacity vs. my 2017 with 1399. I need the extra payload capacity, but don't really want a 2500.

The Payload is what I'm concerned about. The Payload of my 2017 is 1399 and payload of the 2020 is 1776. I calculated and I am at 1750 with family, dogs, hitch weight...etc.

Ahh... yes, I think the payload was improved in the 5th generation. 4th generation Ram 1500s had the lowest payload of the big 3 and I think they heard the complaints. A buddy has a 4th generation 1500 loaded to the hilt with options and his payload is 1069#.... LOL. I guess it's truly a half ton! Up in the 1700-1800 range is a nice improvement for sure.

be sure and check the door sticker for the total when you are shopping because my '19 only has 1324# despite what the ram ads say. I would think the 2020s are pretty much the same

Exactly, took me a while to find my '19 crew cab sport with a payload of 1680lbs. I checked several vins on the website to find the highest payload on this one that i ended up with. Most of them that i checked were in the 1400-1500lbs range.

hard to imagine that my laramie would be more than 450# heavier..that extra fluff is heavy.
