So I'm driving down I40 eastbound from Raleigh to Wilmington and my truck shuts completely down with the cruise set at 71 mph. I manhandled it off the road. It would not restart. Had it towed to the nearest Ram dealer which luckily was only about 15 miles away. That was last Wednesday afternoon. Just got a call today saying it looks like best case the timing chain is broken but they won't know for sure until they get the entire engine broken down. Three year old heavy duty truck with 95,000 mostly highway miles with catastrophic engine failure? What gives? The only thing is the day before I had the oil changed and truck inspected. Thoughts? And of course my extended warranty ran out at 88K miles...

It was one of the local Franchise shops. And you are correct - no-one was hurt!

seems far too common for a ram engine. I read lots of low mile 6.4's failing.

I'm not very happy about it. Most of those miles are highway. I drive back and forth from Wilmington to Raleigh (two hours each way) twice a week with the cruise set at 71 mph. So it's not like the truck has been abused...

I did a quick search on the forum, and it seems more common in the 5.7 than the 6.4. I only have 20k miles on my 2019, but I like to try to keep up with things... Idler pulley seems to be more likely a cause than the chain itself. Most folks say that chain is pretty beefy....

Not familiar with an Idler pulley, but it sounds less expensive than a blown engine? Can anyone speak to this?

I don't know anything about them either, just parroting another post on the topic.

Kinda weird timing chains usually jump a cog or 2 , never heard much about breaking . Hopefully that's what it is and didn't do any internal damage. Good luck .
