So I decided to give my 2019 Ram Classic a quick spray off today due to all of the salt and crap that’s been on the roads. My truck has 1,560 miles and I’ve made 2 payments. Look what I found on my rear bumper today? Seriously? What should I do? Take it to the dealer for a warranty replacement? The new bumper will probably do the same thing, right?

Anyone I know in my rust belt area (Buffalo NY) with a late model Ram with chrome bumpers battles the same thing. It polishes right off for them, but little spots eventually crop back up.

Take it to the dealer if you're so concerned but don't expect a new bumper for such a tiny spec, they'll buff it out if you can't do it yourself, for what it's i wouldn't waste the gas unless the dealer was one block away from my house, you should be able to buff that out quicker than what i took you to take the picture and open up this thread. You should look into anti rust treatments anways, there are different ways to protect your investment, that little thing will be the least of your worries if you live in the salt belt, check out fluid film for DIY, there are also pro treatments that seem to work really good for you guys with salt on the roads.
Good luck.

So, is it bad plating? Cheap chrome? It definitely polishes off, but shouldn’t be there nonetheless. Thin chrome with pinholes I guess.

Bring it to the dealer, at least start a paper trail. IMHO, it's faulty chrome.

will definitely buff off. Just irritated that it’s there I guess. We spend a lot of money for these trucks, would hope for a little better quality is all. Still love the truck..

Road salt is doing that. Hose off your truck before parking every day.

I edited my post to let you know you should look into anti rust treatments for your truck since you live in the salt belt. unfortunaly that's something you have to address first thing to avoid having issues couple of years down the road.

For now give her a good wash, and focus on the underbelly, once dry, polish the bumpers with chrome polisher, then you could use this stuff in your bumper and polish it again with a nice rag, i've used this stuff for years to keep my coilovers/shocks and underbelly protected from the elements, it doesn't stay put like fluid film as it's ligther, but it doesn't smell like chit either, and it's much easier to clean on steel surfaces plus it doesn't attract dirt like fluid flim, repeat every month or so while the roads keep getting salted.

I agree with this. And no, it should not have rust. These bumpers are plated by outside vendors so if you got a new one hopefully it would be from a different run and be better than that. I definitely would not let it go.

You should surely wax that bumper. Wax all paint AND chrome. Boeshield will help you through the winter but I have never used it on chrome shiny stuff. May work great but I haven't tried it. Would be great if you could spray it on the backside of the bumpers.
My grey truck is completely white with salt right now. I hate salt.

9E17AE31-3962-41E0-9AD2-A789BB5EF9FA.jpeg I used to be a die hard Chevy guy. I always had Chevy trucks and cars. My last Chevy truck, I had it for 8 years. The chrome still looked new after 8 years. This truck, under 2,000 miles, rust spots starting on the chrome. Who knows, mYbe the bumpers on my Ram came from a bad batch. Maybe I should take it to the dealer just to have them start a paper trail. I do however hate going to the dealer for anything. I’be always had nothing but bad experiences with them. My last Challenger had moisture in the headlamp. They agreed to replace it but chipped the bumper in the process. My wife had a Grand Cherokee, paint on the fender flaked off, they repainted it and it matched terribly. Now, I have this 19 Ram, bumpers starting to rust. My Hellcat has a terrible paint finish on the hood, looks like they spot painted the one side. I love the look and performance of the Mopar products I have, but I really think they need to improve on quality control.

Orange colored spots on a new vehicle are/is usually rail dust (small bits of iron picked up by rail during transport from the factory to the dealer). There are many products out there to remove it. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st_...dust+remover&qid=1549190073&sort=review-rankA good wash, wax and paint sealant should be done after that. Of course having undercoated is a must to considering where you live.

Learned something today, I was under the impression that most "Brightwork" on cars and trucks were made of Stainless Steel due to the EPA regs about plating, at least in the States.

I will tend to agree that the rust spots are rail rust spots. You might want to check the rest of the body, I am sure you will find more spots.

I agree with the others a good body coating is needed to reduce the effects of the salts.

Suggest you go to a site called Detail Image, they have several videos about rail dust and how to take care of it. Rail dust left alone will put holes in the clear coat.

Good Luck

Definitely a fault in the chroming, I'd complain to FCA if the dealership refuses to replace them.

Just had a look at my 2017 chrome bumpers and they dont have that corrosion you have. I also live in a salt belt and I annually rust proof.

They are all poor quality. If you look at the op's picture you can see the scratch marks under the final coat from the buffing process that goes on in between coatings. If you look at any of our chrome bumpers in the right light you can see these scratches also.

Lots of good advice on here. But at minimum, I would take it back to the dealer and get this documented, and at least ask for a new bumper. Worst case, they turn you down.

Where there is paint chips and rust, you are probably out of luck.

If the dealer won't replace the bumpers, wash, buff, wash again, and wax.

I have 3 Upstate New York, road salt laden, winters on my 2015 Ram. And have no rust issues yet. But I wash frequently, I wax at least once per year, and it get the KROWN rust proofing applied once per year.

Good luck.
