Coming from a 1/2 Ton Tundra that I did enjoyed for 10 yrs, I was averaging 15-16 unloaded highway and 8-10mpg pulling a 4k trailer. Wanted a new truck with a higher towing capacity for a camper down the road. I no 90% of my mileage is non towing so a diesel was not required. ( I had a 06 2500 5.9 prior to Tundra ).
I have only had the new truck for a month and have 1500mi on it aver averaging 15mpg around town/back and forth to work 7mi.
This past weekend I did a 600mi roundtrip on highway fairly empty cruising 70mph and got 17mpg and 10 mpg pulling 4k trailer back. calculated and by dream meter. Not bad for still breaking in and being a 3/4 ton!

Yeah these trucks are pretty efficient. I get about the same with the same setup. I don’t think the diesel will get much better than that and for the cost I wouldn’t have one. But then again I don’t need one either.

That's about what I get sometimes more sometimes less depending on how loaded the bed is.
I had to drive mine to Alabama an make a loop to try to get that initial 500 miles in before I towed the first time. Lot of drivin to go nowhere

I have a 2020 power wagon with 4.10's and 35's and the speedometer and tripmeter have been calibrated and both are spot on per two different Garmin GPS's. I have ~5000 miles on the truck. I just did a 432 mile round trip road trip (Missoula to Bozeman and back) drove 75-80 mph the entire way and got 11.6 mpg going and 13.6 mpg coming back hand figured. Computer on both legs showed only 1/10th mpg optimistic. I do the TFL fill technique with one additional click.

going I had 4 stock tires and wheels so around 360lbs plus probably another 40lbs of gifts and food so not enough to really affect mpg. It is however up hill going east from Missoula for the most part.

Nice, glad to hear you're enjoying it. I'm having a pretty similar experience. I added a 2" front level and Grabber ATX tires and I get around 12-13 to and from work, but that includes letting her run for 10 minutes to warm up before I drive. Empty I get about 16 on the highway.. For comparison, my previous 2016 Ram 1500 with 3.21, 2.1" level, and 34" tires got about 17 on the highway.
Towing my previous 7500# camper I got 8-9 mpg at 65 and the same with my 9300# dry weight 5W. The towing mpg is the same as my 1500 with 5.7 got on the 7500# travel trailer, but the 2500 handled it much better.
She's a big girl with the turning radius of, well, as much space as you can give, but she tows well and is a pretty good daily driver. I HATE not having adjustable lumbar support, the seats are brutal on my back.

These trucks have reliable gas mileage which is much appreciated. I drive 70% short stop city miles and average 11mpg reliably which isn't good but isn't bad considering my driving habits. When I get it on the highway I average 15mpg unloaded and 9-11mpg depending on the load and grade.

The lack of adjustable lumbar support is a killer but I'll be sourcing a manual lumbar driver seat from a wrecked model in 2021 to solve that problem.

I have been looking for a few months and typically they have blown bags, are a $6,000 package deal, or are the same seats I already have. I'm trying to figure out if I can install power seats from a 4g as an option, otherwise I'll install an aftermarket adjustable lumbar support into my current seat that runs about $140.

The 2019 and 2020 2500's with Lone Star Level 1 equipment group adds premium cloth seats that adds manual lumber and a center console. The seats are the same configuration as the Tradesman Level 2 seats with the addition of lumbar and "nicer" cloth seat covers.

Start searching wrecking yards, find VIN's and run them to see what equipment package they were equipped with. The Lone Star level 1 package is popular with HEMI's and the Lone Start Level 2 is popular with Diesel models.

Happy hunting!

For me, all this is moot! It's a Truck. If I was concerned about the milage while using it, I would try to tow with a Subaru... The advantage I have with the RAM are it's looks, options, comfort, and stability while towing. Fuel was made to be consumed. Not going to quibble about the cost or amount when I am enjoying the ride.

I wish I could be like that..I have figured every tank full of gas I have put in since 1971 :). I have owned ~50 new vehicles and it did not matter if it were a Civic that got 40mpg a motorcycle that got 60mpg or a Ford with a 460 and 3speed that got 6mpg. I have always liked knowing what I get.

Not bad at all. I have wanted to do a road trip in mine to check economy, but all of my trips have been dragging 9000 pounds, so 8.7-9.5 mpg for me.

I get near identical mileage. Dropped 1.5-2mpg when changing from OEM Firestone Transforce to General Grabber tires. But grippiness is worth it.

What good is a hard, dry tire that skids in the real world?

Oh, I didn't say I don't track Fuel Consumption. I've done that for 30 years, on all my vehicles. I use it as a guide to performance, and a gauge for quality of fuel, and predictor of future costs. I just don't worry about the pennies when I need to fill up. I just pay for what I need and move on. It's like having a wife... give her what she needs, buy the best and there's no complaining.

The factory firestones are the worst set of tires I have ever owned. Swapped mine for a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s in 35x12.5x20. Night and day difference. I did lose about 1-2 mpgs.....about 18 now unloaded, but I have a 6.7

I agree, I know I'm not going to get great fuel economy; fortunately if I get 10 or 14mpg during my daily life it's rather inconsequential for me. When I'm planning a 4000 mile trip while towing the camper, I need to be prepared for that expense, and that's when it matters to me.

I changed to the Grabbers before a 4000 mile road trip towing the camper from NH to Badlands, SD because I wasn't fully comfortable with the Transforce AT's. I was really happy that I did because we hit some of the heaviest rains I've ever driven through- to the point that cars pulled off the road because the visibility was so poor. Not a hint of hydroplaning or stability concerns. I highly doubt the stock tires would have been able to handle that much water with any degree of stability. Then of course there's winter traction...

Thats great mileage! Thanks for posting your experience.
I enjoy tracking all the big 3 HD gassers these days. Back when I was all diesel the big 3 had 6.0 vortec, Ford and Dodge v-10's.
Since 2015 I have have been in HD gas trucks and watched the big 3 evolove the drivetrains. I don't know much about the new GM 6.6 DI motor, but the new ford 7.3 is impressive. With the mating of the 8spd to the 6.4 hemi, that seems to be the cats meow right now for a lot of guys that just need more than a 1/2 ton and still getting very respectable mpgs.

2015 6.4 3.73 2500 with 90,000 miles on the clock. Many road trips of varying length of flat country, hills and eastern mountains. I see 20 mpg indicated from time to time. Any speed much over 70 mph eats into the mileage number. That big front end has a lot of air to push out of the way. Strong head winds kill it too. Having said all that, I don’t really care about the numbers that much. It’s cheap entertainment to watch the numbers on a trip though.
