My dealer told me on monday that i was able to place an order but they have not yet started production i believe!

My estimated date to dealer arrival is 12/11-25/2020 having placed the order on 9/21/2020. So roughly 12 weeks from order to dealer delivery.

I've been interested in ordering a 2021 3500 all this year, 2020. this is how I thought the process would go:
At a certain time, I would be able to build what I want on Rams website, then submit to dealers in my area. I would then get responses and be able to start shopping for what might be my best deal
Am I right in thinking this is how the process works, or should I pick a dealer, then do the ordering process through them?
I would think having dealers compete for my business would be a better way to go?

Not a 3500, but I ordered a 2021 Ram 2500 Limited with 6.7 CTD on 10/16 and received a VIN. 2021's started building 3rd week of November and mine is in transit to Michigan by railcar. Will be here any day, but as late as 12/28. Cant wait, other than the new payment. Pic of my build attached.
