I managed to put the first dent in the rear bumper of my Night Edition 2022 Ram 1500 Limited. I was backing up behind an auto parts store after I realized that I couldn't circle their building. In backing up, I managed to hit a stone wall on the passenger side corner of the rear bumper. Interestingly, my rear parking sensor didn't indicate that I was closing in on the short stone wall, but regardless I now have a dimple (and paint scrape) at the exact corner of the bumper.

As you can imagine, I am thoroughly disgusted with myself for having missed seeing the stone wall when backing up, but least it wasn't another vehicle. The questions I'm asking myself are:

1) Should I just ignore this scar on my three month old truck and write it off as the first of many scrapes the truck will get?

2) Should I attempt to remove the bumper, pound out the dimple, and rattle can it with some matching color paint (bumper is dark charcoal gray)

3) Should I take the truck to a body shop and have them do the repair?

4) Should I attempt to find the part number, buy a new bumper, get it professionally painted, and then install it myself?

Thoughts?

PS. The truck has dual exhausts and parking sensors (although what good did they do me this time). Any assistiance in locating the part number for this steel bumper will be appreciated.

Has anyone ever tried to pound out a dent in the steel bumpers on our trucks?

I tried on my 4th gen and failed, but I bet you could if you knew what you were doing. I think you should do something before rust sets in. Body shops are so expensive, if you can DIY it without doing a hacky job thatd be the way to go.

I dont thinks it very easy to pound out a dent on a steel bumper. I have a small one in mine and was told I had to take it to someone who specializes in steel bumper dent removal, or replace the bumper. In the end I kept the dent.

If it was me I'd check what a new bumper would cost but knowing my cheapass it would probably be more then I would want to spend on a stock bumper. So I would leave it and keep an eye out on car-part.com or marketplace for a used one or upgrade to an aftermarket bumper.

I have a corner dent on my 4th Gen steel painted bumper
The sensors can't see the corners :(
An 70 year old Olive Tree is there & although i was watching a limb at tailgate height, the base of tree got me.

Then weeks later, the other end of the bumper barely touched the wrought iron fence & peeled the outer layer of paint off of that corner, the black primer is still there.

I am thinking about removing the bumper & having the dent pressed out & get it repainted

I could bolt a 2 X 6 to the bumper brackets temporarily
or i could bolt the chrome 4th Gen Bumper that i have in its place

The Olive Tree really got my last Ram
I came home after driving all day while doing a job
I was not thinking good

You can rattle can it, try to find a specialist for repair, get a new bumper put on, or go Whole Hog, and Get a Heavy Duty Rear Specialty Bumper that a lot of people do. Kinda depends on how much it bothers you and how much you wanna pay the piper. But if you get the rear specialty, means you will get the new front specialty bumper also, like from RIGID. That not be a cheap option either, but a lot of cattle farmers and farm People modify like that and add winches and such on front.

ADDED: When I bought MY 19 in 2018, I had a small dent on the left rear door at purchase. I either had the Dealer PDR shop attempt repair, and the dent is on the crease or:
I got a free TT module set up, and install for free, and free install on side rails: all which I negotiated when bought the truck and live with the lil dent.

I would maybe try some bondo and get matching paint and paint it with a hvlp gun, or something close to that procedure.

I would just leave it alone until you come across a cheap used bumper one day. It doesnt rly look to bad its a pickup truck your going to most likely dent that bumper many times its very rare to see a pickup without a dented rear bumper ahaha mine has like 20 small dents from my trailer.

I would sand it and paint it. If you really want to look new again or buy a new one. likely cost you more for someone to repair/paint it.

I am surprised that you have a chrome bumper on a night addition as mine is painted body color. I would consider getting a new bumper from either auto anything or from the dealer.
Trying to remove the dent and scratches is one thing but trying to repair the chrome will be hard to do. Unless you want to cover it with a bumper sticker. :)

Perhaps jig something up to fill and level out the dent with some Line-X (this stuff dries pretty quickly), and then do like an end cap spray of Line-X on both sides with some sort of custom looking design so it looks balanced on both sides???

I dented the rear chrome bumper on my ‘19 DT and replaced with a new one from MOPAR…$600+. I was disappointed how thin and cheap they were, I carried a bumper with one hand. My ‘12 ST had black bumpers and they were pretty heavy steel, huge difference between the 2.
