Howdy,

I've been looking at a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500; 4WD, regular cab, long bed, with the 8.0 V10 and a 5-speed manual. Rust-free truck with one owner and 140k ish miles.

I live in MN so a gasser would be better for the cold winter and I don't have the desire to roll coal, nor to pay the premium for a Cummins rig in one piece.

Any mechanical woes to worry about on the V10? The transmission I can assume is way more reliable than the 2nd gen automatics, but anything to look out for there? Lastly, if anyone owns/ owned a V10/2500, how are they to drive? Overall seat/interior/ride comfort, besides the fact it's a 2500.

Thanks!

I love mine. A 1999 Quad cab shortbed 4x4

The V10 is a great engine. It gets it's power down low like a Cummins.

The 5 spd is a great transmission.

Mine has 245k on it. I would still be driving it...bit rust waa taking over so I bought a 392 Hemi 2500. The motors are very similar...except the V10 makes more torque much lower in the RPM range.

Love mine

Got the same as 392DevilDog except a couple years newer with 167k. I've had it a few months now, with a few issues but none directly motor related. Had to clean the IACV and throttle body to cure a weird throttle/idle issue, very easy fix. Other than that, 4x4 doesn't engage until the truck is moving due to what I'm assuming is a vacuum problem. It seems like a fairly common-ish issue with these trucks. And, I don't know what the chances of a tensioner pulley breaking on these trucks are, but it happened to me, and the pulleys were getting pretty squeal-y up to that point.

It's great to drive. Lots of power. The most I've tugged with it was a pretty heavy payload for 600 miles, and it did fantastic. I was comfortable the whole way. The seat bolsters are still in great shape, with no deterioration that I can tell; they've held up even better than the ones my 2007 1500 with lower miles had. My only complaint about ride quality is I have to stay cold for a bit until the heat finally comes on. Most Chryslers my family has owned have been that way, though. No interior electronic problems at all.

Sounds to me like it would be a great ride! No rust is impressive, too!

Is the V10 the same Lamborghini engine that is in the Viper?
No, they were developed independently of eachother and share displacement only by coincidence. The Ram V10 is somewhat based off of the LA V8s (318 & 360). Ram made for towing, Viper made for going.

Ah ! so like the Dakota V6 was a 318/360 minus 2 Cyl, The V 10 was a 318/360 plus 2 cyl, makes sense to me. Run with what previously works.
