285/70R17 on 17" Stock Rim?

Hi All,

I have a 2020 Ram Classic SLT with the 17" OEM Rims. I'm looking at purchasing some AT tires and was curious if anybody is fitting the 285/70R17 tires on their stock rigs? I know the stock rims are 7" wide and discount tire is turning people away due to the tires not fitting. Has anybody made it work and avoided excessive rubbing?

Fits just fine. Mine came stock with 20" stock wheels and 33" tires. I swapped them with 285/70/17 and 33" tires. No problems with room to spare.

And you're not running a leveling kit?

Every tire has a manufacturer specified rim width they will work on and if you go to some independent tire shop maybe they'll mount anything on anything, but national retailers won't mount a tire on a wheel that's not approved.

Example I have 285/70R17 Continentals which are specified by the manufacturer for 7.5"-9" wheels. That's fine for me since my wheels are 17x8" but Big O wouldn't have mounted them on 17x7's.

One option for you might be 255/80R17's - several great A/T tires available in that size and they fit fine on a stock 1500. That's what I ran the first 3 years on my Ram.

And you're not running a leveling kit?

Yes, I have 2" leveling strut in the front. However, my OEM Wrangler SRA on ironclad 20" were the same exact size as 285/70/17 on 17" ProComp wheels. So, they would fit even on non-lifted truck. Also, Discount tire was always very flexible with aftermarket tire sizes. To the extent of mounting the tire on your vehicle and checking for rubbing.
