Anyone recently had their rear diff changed from 3:73 to 4:10 at an automotive shop? Curious what the current costs are. I called the dealer and was told it'd be over 3 grand just for parts.

Edit- I realized I left this out. It is a 4x4

4x4 or 2wd ?

3k is way too much for just the rear that is why I am asking if it's a 4x4 ... if it's a 2wd you only have to do the rears and even then to go from 3.73 to 4.10 it's not even worth the money ... any particular reason you want to go to 4.10s ?

I want 4:10 so it will pull.my travel trailer better. I have a travel trailer that weighs 9200 lbs and it struggles to keep it at 70 mph on flat highway. You can imagine what happens when I hit a hill.

Ok makes sense, but you didn't answer, 2wd or 4x4 ?

Sorry didn't see the last post ..

Then yes the cost for regearing will be around $3k because you have to do both the front and rear ... $3k is not too bad to regear a 4x4 but you might be able to find someone else a bit cheaper ..... if you can't then yes $3k is about what you should expect to pay for it ...

JerryETX, I had my gears done last year and it was $2,300 for front and rear. I know with the inflation and parts shortage parts are going to run more now. I am guessing you can get it done out the door around $2,800 if you find a local jeep shop.

Thanks Toddz. Lotta money but it's less than buying another truck for sure.

You will get some who will tell you to go steeper if you are going to regear to like a 4.56 or 4.88. I did the switch 3.73 to 4.11 because my weights run 7800 to 10,000 depending on the toys in the hauler. I was shooting for the sweet spot and I find at those weights the 4.11 is perfect for me. I generally run 60 to 65 and everywhere I travel involves going through the mountains.

Meh - get a tow tuner instead. Works great.

Oh and I forgot to add, when going through mountains at decent elevations the 4.10 will still allow you to run about 60mph in 2nd gear running about 4300 rpms.

Hey Hemimann, what tuner are you running. I looked into the pulsar, but it concerns me the number of people who have had issues. Also, I am limited since I live in Cali.

I have an extended warranty I paid a lot of money for that covers me for another 65k miles or 4 years. Not doing anything that'll void that warranty.

I'm ancient, per this forum. Guys are recommending HP Tuners these days. I installed a Diablosport Edge Pulsar in-line bolt-on PCM and tunes for ~ $600. 4 canned tunes with or without MDS on.

The tow tune really opens her up. Even my kids were impressed. Anyway, so as not to overstress the Chrysler 66RFE transmission, whenever I tow (up to 7,000 lbs gross) I use the tow tune without MDS, and lock the transmission to 5th gear only (1st overdrive for downhill coasting). Some guys lock it into 4th, but our region is driftless (unglaciated) rolling steep hills - no mountains. It feels just right, being a lifelong mechanical engineer.

I also got rid of the stupid trans oil cooling line thermostat, so the oil isn't cooked. Changed the ATF with Mopar ATF+4, a decent API Group III synthetic @ 36k miles. Everything's happy now.

I have the extended warranty too - it is more for the 8.4 display and electronics. If you know what you're doing on the driveline, you won't blow it up.

You are going to have to call around local. Prices seem to vary wildly in different areas around the country. I would also ask them how many HD Rams they have done. I don't think it is quite as straight forward as some other vehicles are so I would want someone who has done a few.

Thanks Hemimann. I had considered the edge pulsar in-line because on my previous truck I was pleased with their tuner. I haven't made the jump because I had heard many have had pcm issues with it. These trucks have so many electronics now it scares me.

Sorry JerryETX, didn't mean to hijack with the tuner question. The regear is expensive but I think you will enjoy towing more. It will hold 3rd on hills longer for you than that 3.73.

Just my opinion, however, in the end, I dont believe you will be happy spending that much money to go from 3.73s to 4.10s. I'd go to 4.30s minimim, or 4.56s with stock tires. If your worried about your warranty, if you have the work on the diffs done by an independent shop, the warranty on those will be toast if they discover the regear was done by a 3rd party shop. I think around $1,500 per axle all in, is the current rate, but shop around. Cheaper isn't always better but you probably already know that.

I've heard of folks who test drove a 73 and a 10 geared truck back to back and couldn't tell any difference. I wont get into why you want to tow a nearly 10k trailer at 70 plus mph and all of the potential consequences of doing that here, you are probably already aware and have made the choice to do so, but I wouldn't suggest it as a general practice for others reading this thread. Its been covered at length several times before in the towing section. At nearly 10k loaded your on the edge of Cummins territory, especially with a 6 speed truck, so towing performance will be reduced at those weights.

If your set on the 10s, I agree that finding a good independent 4x4/jeep shop is best and one that has done a few Ram diffs in the past. You'll get better work and a better price than the stealership. Most dealer techs these days are parts swappers who don't set up diffs regularly and if you dont have them right they will be noisy, or worse, go bang. I suggest you use AAM gears also, they built the axles in our trucks.

Good luck with your decision.
