Went to Ram today to get a price for replacing the 26 gal tank with a 33 gallon tank. Dealer said its a 32 not a 33... So I asked what the out the door price would be?

They gave me a print out and its about $950. This seems resonable.. Anyone have thoughts?

I tow with the truck and my silverado had a 34 gallon tank. I got 600 plus miles per tank not towing and about 300 miles towing with that truck.

To some 6 gallons may not make a difference. To me its an extra hour of drive time.

Having more range while towing is more peace of mind you can make it to the next has station if something happens and you can't get into your first fuel stop choice.

Couldn't agree more.

32 gallon is for the Classic Ram. Can buy on-line for about $150 to $175. These are OEM, But will not fit Standard Cab six foot bed. If longer fits just fine.

You won’t be able to calibrate the larger tank to be reflected accurately to to the gas gauge.

The dealer can do the tank calibration, but I have the 32 and still carry an extra fuel in can(s) for longer trips. Same as I did with the standard tank.

Really, as of last year, the dealer couldn’t calibrate my the 32 gal tank in my 2016 bighorn. Is this a new fix ?

Shouldn't be. None of the trucks with the 32 gallon worked at one point mine included, but they put in an update around the time they did the autopark update that fixed mine.

With my last HEMI powered Ram, with 32 gallon tank
I drove longer distance trips constantly back then

A tank would get me from The Mexico/San Diego Border up to Bakersfield, that was approximately 330 miles, there is a truck Stop further up the I-5 called Rotten Robbies in Santa Nella CA & i would fill up there.

That 32 gallon tank did not hold enough fuel for trips like that
So i had auxiliary fuel tank that held another 30 gallons & three 6 gallon gas jugs

I could not carry the tools that i needed, with that fuel tank & 3 jugs

The 330 mile stops were timed just about right grab some more coffee & getting rid of what i had already drank.

But not having the room to store the longer tools needed to do my job, was not a proper way to go

My ecodiesel can go the distance & i have room for my longer tools

Hmmm, having that extra range does sound appealing. I like others, need to get out and at least stretch my legs after sitting for that long.

$950...... only you you know if it's worth it. For me, I'd also consider looking at how I can make what you have more "efficient" for the same price first, then compare .

Lets say you get 15 mpg as it is, and assuming carrying the extra 36lbs (wt fuel/gal) has no effect on that. That gives you an extra 90 mile range. If you were able to get 18.5 mpg, then it would be a wash and you'd have the same range.

So the question comes, "Is it possible to get another 3.5 mpg better fuel economy out of your Ram?"

Getting more from what you have (26 gal tank) would be more cost effective short term..... and long term. I'd be looking that direction and then decide :waytogo:

Mine's still got the factory 'tune' for the 25g tank ...ha ha

OP, it'll also cost you some $$ probably $120 to have the dealer change the fuel tank adjustment via their software. Just be aware of that (if they can do it for a 2020)

Is it easy to swap the tank? I know programming is another story

Not sure if they have one to fit your truck but for my 2018 2500 SLT I added an XL tank from Titan Tanks. It holds 52 gallons of fuel and I can go almost 600 miles per tank while towing and almost 1,000 miles when I'm straight highway driving at almost 25mpg. I haven't driven 1,000 miles at one time yet but on a recent trip we went 1,000 miles and I did it on one tank. The furthest I've gone in a day while towing was 925 but that included one fuel stop. And the last time I checked my dealer was not able to recalibrate the DTE gauge. I know how far I can go on a tank and I reset the trip ODO at each fill up.

I spec'd my truck with the larger tank and wouldn't order/buy one without it. Range is just more options, and I value that flexibility. Yes, you may want to stop and stretch but now you can do it where there isn't a gas station and everyone else isn't stopping and stretching.
