I'm always amazed how just 4 tiny bolts will be transmitting all the power from the crankshaft to the flexpate then to the torque converter/input shaft then finally to the output shaft of the transmission. I always thought it would be more substantial considering the HP/torque going through the drive line. bolts.jpg

I was curious and needed a chart, (4)10.9 m12s can hold up to a tremendous amount of shear. One of the shafts will fail(aluminum) well before this joint.

I guess the torque converter gives the entire thing a 'cushion' but the whole thing is just amazing. especially considering the flex plate is just thick sheet metal.

i don't know if i would call the flexplate that thick. it is not unheard of to hear of flex plate cracking or breaking. bolts are pretty strong. would be no different than you hooking a 5000lb trailer to a trailer hitch that is only held to your vehicle with 4-6 bolts. the bolts are usually stronger than the metal they go through which is why most install kits come with the spacers that spread the force over larger area so the bolts don't wrip through the frame.

It's all explained here:

That is a classic video. I think I've watched it a bunch of times. just for fun and nostalgia.

Even more amazing, doing an engine swap from a 92 ram into a 95 dakota, after installing the engine, we realized it was put back together with the wrong plate. So only 3 of the 4 bolts lined up. Ran it like that for a long time. No issues.
