Have an 04 an get 14 city.
Up to 21 Hwy.
Idk what is wrong with his truck.
The 6.7s get decent mileage. But I would never buy anything EGR. Rebuilds til I die. Lmao

If you want a CTD buy one. For most of us though if you put the pencil to the equation it seldom pays for itself. The $8100 option, additional cost of fuel, and added maintenance costs just didn't add up for me. Take into account the added emissions over the last few years, loss of HP and fuel mileage over the previous CTD and I will stick with my 6.4 It is common for the newer gas engines to run 200,000 plus miles now with little if any major maintenance issues and they are right up there with the life span of the CTD.

Lol. Your 6.4 will never outlast a 6.7
But, I have heard, more and more, about how bad the mileage is on the newer Cummins, I have the oldest 5.9L common-rail with nothing EGR related.. And I can honestly say I get better mileage towing than most do empty and I'm over 300k on the Odometer.
I guess I had higher aspirations for the 6.7 but unfortunately if the gasser is getting better mileage, then to each their own.. But if someone tows regularly.. You know that Hemi will not last as long as it should.
One thing with that Hemi stuff. Its cheaper at the desk new... And a lot cheaper used.. As opposed to CTD.

My '05 CTD would not get 20 mpg empty going downhill with a tailwind.

My 2007 5.9 would only get 17 highway bone stock. It was totaled in 2009. I bought a left over 2008 with the 6.7 Cummins. Truck never got over 15 mpg and was constantly in the shop for plugged dpf messages and limp modes.

This is when I gave up on diesel and sold my 5 th wheel.

Are you just a diesel fanboy or are you just being ignorant? Put some research into the 6.4 they put in these trucks and then come back and join the discussion instead of just bashing on gas engines. Hur dur roll coal :puke:

I had a 2000 dually with a cummings. No doubt can pull anything. But the 4:10 rear end thats in most contribute to poor milage. Repairs are astronomicle on the cummings. With the new emmision crap on diesel, the government can :flipthebird: before I would buy a newer one. Unless your constantly pulling heavy loads, not worth getting a diesel.

^^^brand new motor, more miles might get you better results?????

Like stated before, the 6.4 is tuned specifically for truck type work and long low maintenance life.

My 07 5.9 did not get close to as good of milage as my 13 gets. The disconnecting front axle and the scr systems made a huge difference along with the ram active air box that was all added in the 13+ trucks. I would never own a 07.5-12 6.7 cummins for many reason and fuel milage is one.

A very good friend of mine has his own construction company and has 2 ram 2500s with the 5.7. Both are 4x4 crew cabs. His personal truck has one size taller mud grips on it and he is claiming 15mpg empty the other has factory tires and a highflow muffler And gets 17mpg empty. He didn't give me any towing fuel numbers but they both pull damn good. Not sure on the gears but the heaviest thing he pulls with it is a bulldozer. Not sure of the size but it's probably between 14,000 to 20,000 lbs. also most of the driving is open road, not a lot of in town stop and go.

After 1700 miles im just shy of 14mpg with the 6.4.. At this point it does not matter . I like this truck so much I would continue to drive it if it got 8mpg .
I go through truck like underware and im thinking this one will be around a while ....

6.4 L. Why have less power, when u can have more? And it doesn't cost TOOOO much upfront, as the diesel upgrade does.

Another area the 6.4 has an advantage is payload. A 2500 crew cab 4x4 has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs while a 5.7 is 9,000 lbs. The payload rating for my truck is 3000 lbs. It would only be 2000 lbs with the 5.7 which is pretty weak for a 3/4 ton truck.

If you want a diesel- buy it. For many of us putting a pencil to it makes us realize we would never get the $8100 option price back. Add that to the additional maintenance costs of a diesel over its lifetime, additional fuel cost of about .50 a gallon and other factors and it just doesn't make sense for what I use the truck for. As a heavy equipment operator diesels are made to start and run, not for trips to the bank and drive through McDonalds. Many diesel pickup owners experience electrical and starting issues when starting and shutting down the diesels when used as daily vehicles. In the old days diesels were respected for their longevity. The newer gas engines commonly run 250,000 miles or more thereby matching their diesel counterparts.
It all boils down to what you want in a truck and how it is used.

Look at my signature, I've had them all. Diesels are sluggish and expensive (to buy & maintain), but they will pull what ever you dare hook up to. The 5.7 makes it's power higher up in the RPM range than the 6.4 does. Not the best choice for a 3/4 ton truck. It is better suited for a light 1/2 ton. The 6.4 is the perfect motor IMHO for a 3/4 ton truck that only occasionally sees light towing. The big Hemi makes power all across the board and they are actually fun to drive! While you're at it get a Power Wagon!!!

Lower gears would help, with lower gears it would be able to upshift to a higher gear and stay in it better.
The transmission has real high gearing so a low gear in the diff helps put the power down more efficient.
With the transmission thats in the 2500s they should not come with 3:73s, should be more like 4:10s and 4:56s.

I am definitely looking into the 6.4L instead of the 6.7L CTD for our retirement tow vehicle! Just need the right Transmission & gearing combo.

Just to many dam issues with the egr & def systems occurring.
It's only going to get worse! With more & more restrictions & regulations being handed out.
