I have been looking in to modifying my 5.7: Stroker, cam, heads and Whipple. Most shops gave me a quote, but the last shop I called offered to sell me a complete stock 6.1, harness, PCM. With better breathing heads and a forged bottom end, this sounds great. However, has anyone actually performed the swap? Is it worth it? What will I need?

If I remember correctly the 6.1 heads do not outflow the 5.7 eagle heads

A stock 6.1 isn't going to outperform a built and blown 5.7. That's a no brainer. What are your goals?

Could you explain further.

It physically drops into place without issues, it's the computer that needs to be made happy and you need a good tuner who is familiar with the swap because the engine wiring harness is slightly different. The active intake solenoid needs to be deactivated and tuned out, the vvt solenoid needs writing out and camshaft timing needs to be rewritten to remove the timing retard/advance. A PCM swap from a 6.1 doesn't work in the trucks because the 6.1L uses a pcm/bcm/tcm combo, the truck runs everything through the PCM.

You also need to make sure you have the correct reluctor gear because there's two different ones available, 37 and 58 iirc.

depending on the hp output, you will likely have to beef up the trans.

Got in touch with a local shop. They will piece together a stroker kit, port the heads and source all of the necessary valvetrain. I will try to post pics and info as the build happens

He mentioned a K1 crank, CP pistons/Rods/Pins, Ferrea valves and a Lunati S/C cam. Depending when this gets done, I may be running N/A until the Whipple is available.
